Paul Otto (General)

Paul Otto (born July 12, 1881 in Güstrow , † January 14, 1961 in Schliersee ) was a German officer , most recently a general of the infantry in World War II .

Life

In 1901 Otto joined the 6th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 49 of the Prussian Army as a flag junior . In 1906 he was transferred to the Schutztruppe in German South West Africa and took part in the suppression of the Herero and Nama uprising . From 1912 Otto was sent to the war academy for further training and has since been promoted to first lieutenant . During the First World War he had various staff assignments.

After the end of the war, Otto worked in the Hindenburg Freikorps and was then accepted into the Reichswehr . On October 1, 1932 Otto was promoted to colonel and commanded the 21st (Bavarian) Infantry Regiment in Nuremberg from November 1, 1932 to March 31, 1934 . He then served as Infantry Leader IV until September 30, 1934.

At the beginning of the Second World War, Otto accepted the surrender of the Polish General Kleeberg after the battle of Kock / Adamow during the attack on Poland on October 6, 1939 as commander of the 13th Infantry Division . At the end of October 1939 he gave up the division, became head of the German military mission in Slovakia and in this position was promoted to general of the infantry on December 1, 1940. On May 1, 1942, Otto returned to Germany and was Commanding General of Military District Command IX until April 30, 1943 . in Kassel . He was then transferred to the Führerreserve and retired from military service on October 31, 1943.
