Paul Riley (* 23. September 1963 in Liverpool ) is a former English football player and current - trainer , who has been the season in 2017 , the franchise of the North Carolina Courage in the National Women's Soccer League trained.

Career

Riley began his career in 1988 with ASL affiliate Albany Capitals . After his contract was not renewed there, he moved to league rivals New Jersey Eagles , where he stayed until 1990. From 1991 to 1993 Riley played one season each for the teams Glen Cove , Hercules and New York Atlas in the lower class New England Professional Soccer League . From 1994 until his retirement in 1997 he ran in the professional United States Interregional Soccer League for the Long Island Rough Riders .

Trainer

Even before and during his active career, Riley was in charge of the soccer team of the Long Island University CW Post Campus , the CW Post Pioneers , initially as an assistant coach and from 1990 to 1997 primarily responsible. In 1997 he took over the team of the Long Island Rough Riders , where he had ended his career as a player, seamlessly as head coach and looked after them until 2003.

From 2006 to 2009, Riley coached the WPSL franchise Long Island Fury , his first stop in women's football . From 2010 he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in the WPS , where he was named coach of the year by the league in the first year and only lost the championship final in 2011 on penalties against Western New York Flash . After the dissolution of the WPS before the 2012 season, Riley moved to the New York Fury , a "sister team" of the Long Island Fury in the newly formed WPSL Elite . For the 2014 season he took over the NWSL participant Portland Thorns FC . With a third place in the regular season, the Thorns reached the play-offs, in which they lost 2-0 to eventual champions FC Kansas City in the semifinals . The 2015 season was far less successful: A sixth place in the league meant the first missed the play-offs in the NWSL history of the Thorns. Riley's expiring contract was not extended as a result. In February 2016 he was introduced as the new coach of the Western New York Flash.
