Peña Amarilla is a town in the Potosí department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Peña Amarilla is a village in the canton of Tupiza in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Tupiza in the province of Sur Chichas . The village is located at an altitude of 3346  m on one of the dry valleys that only carry water during the rainy season, which lead to the Río Cotagaita and are connected to the Río Pilcomayo via the Río Tumusla and the Río San Juan del Oro .

Peña Amarilla lies between the mountain ranges of the Cordillera de Chichas and the Cordillera Central , which rise from the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano . The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal fluctuations.

The annual average temperature is 15 ° C (see climate diagram Cotagaita) and fluctuates only slightly between 11 ° C in June / July and 18 ° C in December and January. The annual precipitation is only about 300 mm, with a very pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 70 to 80 mm monthly precipitation.

Peña Amarilla is 288 kilometers by road south of Potosí , the capital of the department.

From Potosí, the paved road Ruta 1 leads from Lake Titicaca in the north to the Argentine border in the south and crosses the cities of El Alto , Oruro and Potosí . From Potosí it leads 37 kilometers south to Cuchu Ingenio , where route 14 branches off to the south and via Vitichi , Tumusla , Cotagaita and Ramadas to Peña Amarilla and further south via Hornillos and Tupiza to Villazón on the Argentine border leads.
