Peña Colorada is a town in the department of Cochabamba in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Peña Colorada is the central place of the canton Peña Colorada in the municipality of Omereque in the province of Narciso Campero . The village is located at an altitude of 1585  m on the Quebrada Huerla, a tributary to the Río Mizque , two kilometers south of its confluence with the Río Mizque.

Peña Colorada lies between the mountain ranges of the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Central . The climate is characterized by a typical daytime climate , in which the temperature fluctuations between day and night are greater than between the seasons.

The annual average temperature of the region is around 20 ° C (see climate diagram), with the monthly averages fluctuating between 17.5 ° C in July and 22 ° C from October to February. Annual precipitation is 500 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly values ​​below 20 mm, and a short moisture period from December to February with around 100 mm per month.

Transport network

Peña Colorada is located at a distance of 239 kilometers by road southeast of Cochabamba , the capital of the department.

From Cochabamba the paved national road Ruta 7 leads in a southeast direction 44 kilometers to Paracaya , from there the trunk road Ruta 23 continues for 146 kilometers to the southeast via Punata , Arani and Mizque to Aiquile . Four kilometers before Aiquile, the national road Ruta 5 turns east towards Saipina and after 55 kilometers reaches Peña Colorada on the course of the Quebrada Huerla . From here a side road leads 11 kilometers along the Río Mizque in a northerly direction to Omereque .
