action

Student Dan Millman takes part in athletic competitions for the gymnastics squad of the University of California, Berkeley , California and dreams of winning the Olympics. He has numerous short-lived relationships with women. One day he meets a man in a car repair shop whom he calls " Socrates " and who later becomes Millman's mentor. From him the student gets to know a completely different philosophy of life, which teaches him to free himself from superfluous things and to listen to his inner voice, which only a few manage.

Dan befriends Joy, who puts the teachings of Socrates into practice. Millman is hospitalized after a serious motorcycle accident. His right thigh suffers a debris fracture and is stabilized with a steel bar. Socrates disappears without a trace.

background

The film was shot in Los Angeles , the University of California at Berkeley, and a few other locations in California. Its production amounted to an estimated 14 million US dollars . However, the film only grossed approximately $ 3.96 million in US cinemas and approximately $ 222,000 in other countries.

Reviews

Robert Koehler wrote in Variety magazine on May 4, 2006 that the film was inspired by New Age . Reciting the calls for a better life cannot replace a full movie, however. The film seems particularly artificial from the point in time when Amy Smart appears. There is little Nick Nolte can do to make more of the character he plays than a person who is too much in love with the sound of his own voice.

Sheri Linden praised Scott Mechlowicz and Nick Nolte's "strong portrayals" in The Hollywood Reporter .
