Peng Liyuan ( Chinese  彭麗媛  /  彭丽媛 , Pinyin Péng Lìyuán , born November 20, 1962 in Yuncheng , Shandong , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese soprano , performing artist and university teacher. She is the wife of Xi Jinping , who has been President of the People's Republic of China since 2013.

Life

Peng is from Yuncheng County of Heze in east China's Shandong Province .

She is one of the most famous interpreters of so-called red songs and a representative of contemporary ethnic vocal music in China . She belongs to the song and dance ensemble of the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army , of which she is the leader, and holds a civilian rank comparable to that of major general .

She joined the People's Liberation Army in 1980 . In July 1985 she joined the Communist Party .

She was or is a member of the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th  Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People .

She was one of the first in China to receive a Masters degree from the Central Conservatory in Beijing in Traditional Ethnic Vocal Music of China , a course that was established in the 1980s.

She now teaches at the Central Conservatory in Beijing as a professor. She holds many positions in the artistic field.

In the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in 1982, she became famous with the song Auf dem Feld Full Hope (《在 希望 的 田野 上》 Zài xīwàng de tiányě shàng) - a song in praise of the appearance and vitality of rural China. In the meantime she has received numerous awards in singing competitions across the country. She is a regular guest on the CCTV program, especially the New Year Gala, the most watched Chinese media event of the year.

Peng was already a singing star when she met her husband Xi Jinping in 1986. The couple married a year later. At that time, Xi was vice mayor of Xiamen (Amoy) in Fujian Province . Their daughter Mingze , born in 1992, studied at Harvard University . She successfully completed her studies in 2014 and lives in Beijing. Peng often appears in army vocal performances. On August 1st, 2007, on the 80th birthday of the Chinese army, Peng Liyuan presented their new production, My Soldier Brothers.

Other well-known songs by her are people from our village (《父老乡亲》Fùlǎo xiāngqīn ) and Qomolangma (《珠穆朗玛》Zhūmùlǎngmǎ ).

According to a Chinese website, "their singing is widespread in every town and village in the motherland, and their art is deeply rooted in the masses."

On the occasion of the Austrian state visit to Beijing from April 7, 2018, it was reported that Peng Liyuan appeared as the prima donna of the Peking Opera in a guest performance on August 30, 2008 in the Vienna State Opera as Mulan (Eng. Magnolia) in the opera of the same name. This was also her last appearance as a singer. After all, from his election as Vice President of the People's Republic on March 15, 2008, her husband was the designated successor to President Hu Jintao .

First Lady

When her husband Xi Jinping was actually named president on March 14, 2013, she took on the protocol duties of a first lady . During the Austrian state visit on April 8, 2018, she received a Swarovski rose made of cut, highly refractive and dispersive lead glass and a music edition from the Vienna Philharmonic . The couple's invitation to a return visit also applies to the New Year's concert .
