The Pentax * ist D is a digital reflex camera with autofocus and K bayonet . It was introduced in 2003 and was the first digital SLR camera from Pentax with interchangeable lenses available on the market after the MZ-D was not ready for the market . Its 23.5 mm × 15.7 mm image sensor generates an image with 3,008 × 2,008 pixels , corresponding to 6.1 megapixels. The housing shape of the * ist D largely corresponds to its analog sister model Pentax * and is considered to be comparatively compact. In contrast to all successors that use SD cards , the * ist D uses CF cards as a storage medium. 4 commercially available AA / R6 NiMH rechargeable batteries are used as the power source , but 4 × AA / R6 mignon batteries or 2 × CR-3V cells can also be used in an emergency . Like the Pentax * ist Ds, the camera supports both older TTL flash units with analog control (e.g. the Pentax AF-500 FTZ) and digitally controlled P-TTL flash units.

When it was launched, the Pentax * ist D offered connection to the widely used lens and accessory series for the PK bayonet connection.
