Per Erik Wahlund
Per Erik Wahlund (born July 1923 in Stockholm ; † January 30, 2009 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish writer , literary and theater critic , publisher , theater director and translator . He mainly translated English and German, but also Japanese literature into Swedish.
Life
Wahlund's father was a senior judge and died early, so that the son was raised by his mother. Wahl, and reported that he learned to read at the age of four because he was often lonely. There were no children's books and so he read illustrated editions by August Strindberg and Dante . Wahlund made his debut as a fifteen-year-old high school student with the story Kurs på Jamaica ( Course to Jamaica ), the story of a school boy. He began studying Nordic languages at Uppsala University in 1941 and graduated in 1945. During his studies from 1944 to 1948 he worked as a critic for the newspaper Nya Tidning in Uppsala. He worked for the newspaper Expressen from 1950 to 1969 and from 1971 to 1980 literary and theater reviewer for the daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet . Wahland also held managerial positions within the publishing house. After a short period as head of the Lindblads bokförlag publishing house in Uppsala, he worked as a literary advisor for the publishing house Natur och Kultur .
In addition to translations and his own writing activities, Wahlund continued his academic studies and received his doctorate in literature in 1965. In the years after 1960 he was guest director at the Uppsala City Theater and at the Svenska Teatern in Helsinki . For a short time he was also head of the Swedish Radio Theater in 1969.
He was married to Ulla-Britt Wahlund, née Wahlberg.

After his early high school prose debut , Wahlund turned to poetry . In the 1940s he published a number of poetry collections, one of which Luftspegling ( mirage ) of 1952 was the most successful. The essay collection Bordssamtal ( table discussions ) shows how he developed a great talent for essays with great skill in the 1960s. Wahlund's works are characterized by their sharp photographic detail and a crystal clear sense of language.
He wrote with a clear and consistent quality and was a leading translator of several languages of all genres : poetry, prose, drama , essay writing . In prose, Wahlund is known for his outrageously truthful work with classics such as Jonathan Swift , Daniel Defoe, and Herman Melville . His many theater translations include playwrights from many eras and languages: Georg Büchner , Hugo von Hofmannsthal , Arthur Schnitzler , Bertolt Brecht and many more. Elegant and wistful poetry with a classic verse was his trademark. He was considered a pioneer who brought Japanese poetry to the Swedes. Wahlund has translated works by several Nobel Prize winners into Swedish: Yasunari Kawabata , Kenzaburō Ōe , Heinrich Böll and Günter Grass .
He was also respected among colleagues and readers as a theater and literary critic. From 1950 to around 1980 he wrote for the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet . Theater reviews from those years have been published in four selected collections. His multifaceted activity provided him with a large and appreciative readership, but also a place in the Gastronomic Academy and an honorary doctorate in philosophy at Uppsala University. Wahlund was not only a man of literature and theater, but also of good food. He wrote essays about culinary art and master chefs like in Kosthåll from 1977. His forays through the world are instructive and full of esprit , for example in London Promenader from 1967.
