The two of them can't even say for sure whether it's a man or a woman. However, Finch finds evidence that said Jordan Hester leads a double life. With two apartments as well as two jobs and two accounts. When he and Reese begin an investigation, however, they quickly find out that it is exactly the opposite: Jordan is not a person who has two lives. Reese and Finch draw the most obvious conclusion from this: In order to unite the Cosa Nostra under his leadership, Elias apparently wants to eliminate their previous leaders, including his half-brother. A first attempt to protect one of the mafia bosses from Elias fails. After Reese couldn't convince him to accept him as protection for his life, all he can do is watch the mafioso and his bodyguards blow up. Carter finds out that Elias invested the whopping four million dollars in hiring people for his campaign, making a pact with HR officers. When she and Fusco take the other Dons into protective custody, Elias has her son kidnapped. Reese makes one last attempt at rescue.

On John's birthday he gets a day off from Harold, in addition to a small box with a key in it. The case of Sarah Jennings, who has to flee from her violent husband, would rather be done by Finch without Reese. The story is too reminiscent of John's old friend Jessica, who was murdered by her husband Peter, who then tried to cover up with a car accident. This story is told through the joint research of Detective Carter and FBI Agent Donnelly. Sarah, on the other hand, also has the problem that her husband Brad works at the United States Marshals Service and does not shy away from using the whole agency to hunt down his wife with false accusations and an arrest warrant. When Reese finds out, neither Finch nor Carter can stop him.

On closer inspection, the financial advice turns out to be a camouflaged NSA listening station. Peck is an analyst , but on behalf of the government. On the basis of his reports, various terrorist attacks could be prevented because the masterminds could be pulled out of circulation in time. When Peck realizes that these successes came about without any action on his part because someone had subsequently incorporated the names of the masterminds into his reports, he tries to get to the bottom of the matter. He is thus on the way to discover the existence of the machine and should therefore be killed.

Finch finds himself in the clutches of the hacker Root, who wants to obtain information about his ominous machine. Therefore, she threatens to harm innocent people if he should resist her. In order to save his partner, Reese contacts the machine personally, which then passes a series of incoherent words to him. Only after a while does he realize that this is a code that contains the social security numbers that Finch normally got from the machine. The number that the machine has now given Reese leads him to the former investment banker Leon Tao. However, he seems to have no idea where Harold is. Instead of leading him on the trail of his friend, the machine gave Reese Taos number for completely different reasons: Leon embezzled drug money from an Aryan brotherhood and is now being chased across New York by a bunch of ruthless neo-Nazis. After all, Reese captures the trained Belgian shepherd "Bear" .

What he cannot suspect is that Root now not only has Harold under her control, but also the Special Counsel Denton Weeks, whom she tortures in front of Finch to find out where the machine is. That also makes his daughter a possible target. Reese sneaks into the embassy as a bodyguard to protect the young lady. Which is not so easy, however, since he is a highly unruly person.

At first everything looks like one thing is clear: Riley and Massey's son Eddie are supposed to silence the rebellious waitress Annie. Reese wants to prevent that. But things are very different than initially thought: Riley is actually dating Annie and has been thinking about leaving Massey's organization for a long time. Massey knows about it and wants his son to kill the renegade. But Riley is faster. He kills Eddie and goes on the run with Annie. When Massey puts a million dollar bounty on the two of them, Reese suddenly has both hands full to protect them from an onslaught of contract killers. Maxine Angelis is a dedicated, if somewhat overzealous investigative journalist, whom the machine draws Reese and Finch's attention to. The two suspect that Maxine could be in danger because of one of two big stories the hardworking reporter has to deal with: First, she has just uncovered a case of illegal campaign funding in the running for the office of New York mayor. On the other hand, she tries to find out who is the big boss behind the secret organization "HR" . The FBI has smashed large parts of the organization with Fusco's anonymous help, but the chief agent Donnelly has not yet got hold of the mastermind. When Angelis actually falls into the sights of bloodthirsty killers, a rescue operation turns out to be difficult, because the reporter also researches the "man in the suit". In order to get them inconspicuously out of the line of fire, Harold arranges a date between John and Maxine, which, however, does not turn out too romantic during the course of the evening.

However, upon further investigation, Finch discovers that the real Graham Wyler has been dead for 15 years. That's how long his candidates sit in prison on Rikers Island. Detective Carter, meanwhile, has long since taken the initiative and deleted Reese's fingerprints from the system. Next, she tries to exchange the DNA to make it impossible to identify John, as the FBI cannot hold the men for more than 72 hours without charge. In the meantime, Finch is already busy with the next "person of interest": The machine pointed out the 17-year-old student Caleb Phipps. For her it is a tightrope act: she must try to divert suspicion from John without it arousing the suspicion of the highly observant FBI officer. For John, too, the situation becomes dicey when he not only meets the mafia godfather Elias while walking in the courtyard, who he has to fear that he will blow John's cover. The latest number brings John and Harold to Logan Pierce, a young, easily bored billionaire who made his fortune as the co-founder and technical genius behind the social networking site FriendCzar . Before they can even find out whether Pierce is the perpetrator or the victim, Reese and Finch face the problem of how to keep an eye on the target person. Pierce is an eccentric, as he is in the book. Sometimes he speeds off in his sports car, the next moment he disappears in his helicopter. And since he changes his mobile phone twice a day for fear of industrial espionage, it is extremely difficult to tap him in the usual way. But the two of them only really get in a hurry when the first murder attempt is actually carried out on Logan. Without realizing the consequences, Reese takes an unusual path to rescue Pierce.

To determine where the danger might lie for them, both he and Harold go undercover into the hotel, Reese assuming disguise as a page and Finch, the concierge, secretly monitoring the hotel cameras. Meanwhile, Carter receives a visit from FBI Agent Moss. In the files of his late colleague Donnelly he found a recommendation to appoint Carter to the FBI service and she is still interested in the career change. As a first hurdle, however, she has to endure a polygraph survey, which threatens to reveal her secret collaboration with the “man in the suit”. In Berlin, the American secret agent Sameen Shaw, together with her colleague Cole, who works as technical support in the background, switched off an Islamist terrorist cell that had planned an attack with a “dirty bomb”. The two are then called back to New York, where a new number is waiting for them. This time, however, it's about a local terrorist. While the two wait for him to leave his apartment so that they can access his computer, Cole asks his partner if she has ever wondered where the numbers come from and if they could be wrong. In a case two years ago, he conducted an investigation which found that the victim at the time had absolutely no terrorist connections. But before he can explain further connections, they get into an exchange of fire that only Shaw escapes alive. She receives support from the mysterious "man in a suit".

A violent storm is raging over New York and parts of the city have to be evacuated for safety. Harold Finch is concerned that the machine has not found a new number for three days in a row. He fears that it could have something to do with the virus that Reese's former CIA partner Kara uploaded to the Internet on an unknown order via the servers of the Department of Defense. Suddenly, however, Harold and John get six numbers at once: they belong to six men who live all over the country. There is initially no visible connection between them, but three of them have been reported missing. John is tracking down New York-based Jack Rollins who, it seems, recently drove to Owen Island. He follows him, although the weather is getting worse and the island is soon closed from the outside world. In a chamber play reminiscent of Agatha Christie, everything is open to the last. Detective Carter must overcome her distrust of her friend Beecher in order to get to the island.

In order to clear the matter up, the two of them have to find out where he got all the money from. In the meantime, Detective Carter learns that her colleague Szymanski is being investigated just before he was supposed to testify in court against the Russian mafioso Peter Yogorov. And his tenacity even seems to finally bear fruit. Harold sneaks into the company himself as an IT employee and tries to clarify where the threat to Monica comes from. After watching her download data from the laptop of a recently deceased colleague, they suspect a case of industrial espionage. Internal investigations are started against Fusco, which puts not only him, but also Carter in the uncomfortable position of having to grapple with his past. At the same time, the machine points to the respected cardiac surgeon Dr. Nelson there. Just as Reese at an award ceremony for Dr. Nelson starts the investigation, it's too late. Nelson was poisoned with the radioactive substance polonium. The murder of the doctor can therefore no longer be reversed. Reese can only offer to find out who is behind it. The Special Counsel found out that behind the attack on the machine was a Chinese technology company called Decima Technologies, which operates from Shanghai. Root contacts Harold and offers him her support in averting the danger to the machine. Carter also notices the failure of the machine, even if of course she does not know the exact relationships. The Russian mafia does away with the people of Elias on a large scale. In this way, eight bodies have already come together in two weeks without Reese and Finch being on hand to prevent the crimes in advance. Suddenly Harold receives another call from the machine. Especially since the machine keeps him and Shaw busy with numbers of people in immediate need. Meanwhile, HR is targeting Carter and arranges for her to be questioned by the internal investigation department about fatal shots at a supposedly unarmed man. However, it seems to be precisely this passion for playing agents that puts Gen in great danger. Shaw has to put aside her dislike of children and her cold, aloof manner if she is to help the girl. In the gubernatorial election for New York, against Lee's calculations, Michelle Perez, the rival candidate, won - he suspects manipulation, but the power behind it has all means to cover up and even murder. Ultimately, Lee is just a pawn in a bigger game and the team of the machine is no longer on the lever. Looking back to 2001, we learn how difficult it was for Harold to teach his machine to respect human life. An educational measure that nobody undertook for Samaritan.

Harold flies to Hong Kong for a computer conference, where he meets Elisabeth Bridges, the head of the software company Geospatial. Both get closer with some ulterior motives - a reunion in New York is to be expected. On her day off, Shaw has to go to the computer in the headquarters, while John and Fusco experience more than enough action. Walter Dang, who is under protection, is an inconspicuous insurance man who, for the sake of his dear colleague Elena, is investigating the alleged suicide of her brother Abel Mindler. He even pretends to be a detective. Abel was an unemployed truck driver who got in the way of a Chicago arms dealer while doing a casual job. Someone in New York has ordered 100 special weapons with explosive armor-piercing ammunition, a danger that even Elias calls into action.

Shaw quits her service with the burglar Romeo because he did not keep to agreements. This gives her the opportunity to get on with the next number of the machine. Tomas Koroa operates as a wine merchant, but is head of an international gang of burglars after work. The current theft puts him in the crosshairs of his gang members and two government agents who are pursuing the relevant goals. John and Fusco have to step in as reinforcements. Harold is a bit overwhelmed because he has to keep an eye on a second company at the same time. New York's new governor, Nicholas Dawson, subconsciously works for Samaritan and John Greer. He donated $ 12 million to computer expert Jared Wilkins for a seemingly purely charitable educational project. Root works his way up to Wilkins as a nanny and Harold tries to sabotage the project under the eyes of Samaritan.

John has accepted the job as an instructor at the Police Academy to oversee a recruit, Dani Silva. When he prevents an attempt on her, John's psychiatrist Dr. Iris Campbell with him, which gives her a new perspective on his “hero complex”. The case is closely related to the Brotherhood gang. Her boss Dominic now has most of the New York underworld in hand and goes on the hunt for Elias. Shaw came into focus from Samaritan during her last assignment with Tomas Koroa. She prevented Greer from Decima Technologies from getting his hands on a highly dangerous virus, so he puts agent Martine Rousseau on her. Shaw is said to be the lever to track down the whole team underground.

Shaw is shot at by Decima agent Martine Rousseau at her job as a cosmetics seller and escapes with Roots' help. However, she does not see that she has been exposed and that she now has to hide underground. She would much rather help John, who once again has to protect gang boss Carl Elias, because he is the lesser evil compared to his adversary Dominic. The Brotherhood boss has identified all of Elias' allies thanks to the stolen files of his mole in the police academy. Bruce Moran, a friend of Elias from his youth at the children's home, appears. Moran takes care of Elias' finances and probably also represented him while he had to hide after his escape from prison. Dominic now wants to hunt down Elias to rule the New York underworld by himself. After Shaw escapes again, Greer understands that Samaritan has a blind spot when it comes to tracking down Harold and his friends. That is why he gives his agent Rousseau a whole troop as reinforcements.

Samaritan wants direct contact with the machine. That is why it ensures that no serious crimes occur for one day in New York by providing the police with information about planned crimes and its agents even taking care of the "irrelevant" cases. Root and John meet Decima agents Lambert and Rousseau without either side gaining the upper hand. So Samaritan opens the fight against Harold's machine by inciting all New Yorkers against one another. Traffic chaos and revealed secrets like the witness protection list of the US Marshals Service cause numerous murders. The authorities like John, Harold, Fusco and Root are powerless. Shaw is still tied to the underground as her camouflage no longer works. So the machine engages in a dialogue with Samaritan via Root, who in turn uses Gabriel Hayward, a highly talented elementary school student, as a mouthpiece. Samaritan announces that it will eliminate the machine and its agents as competition and then take control of humanity in order to solve all of its problems such as war, hunger or crime. Flashbacks show John Greer's past as an MI6 agent in the 1970s that led him to bring Samaritan to power.

The stock market collapses because Samaritan takes over their computer system. The world economy is about to collapse. So Root, Harold, John and Fusco see themselves forced to break into the servers of the New York Stock Exchange in order to install counter-software. Root sent Shaw to get the necessary access code from an employee who is currently on the subway. Unfortunately, in the same car there is a desperate man with an explosives vest who has lost everything in the stock market crash. Shaw, of all people, is chosen to dissuade him non-violently from committing suicide and tearing those around him to their death. John Greer hired Samaritan to cause the stock market crash in order to lure the machine's team into a deadly trap. A superior force of his agents is already waiting for them. The machine only has seconds to find one of the thousands of possibilities that will enable the success of the mission and the survival of its allies. In 2003 Harold taught her to play chess and the moral that people are not replaceable pawns. But the chances are bad ...

Shaw sacrificed itself so that Harold's team could escape after using counter-software to avert the stock market crash. But her friends are not ready to give her up and are looking for her. First in New York, then on the trail of ISA agents in Washington. There Control works as before on the identification and liquidation of terror suspects, but now with the information from Samaritan. So she lets her agents take out a suspected terrorist cell in Detroit. But a suspect can escape. She tries to find his traces herself, but gets to feel the resistance of Samaritan. The system has also downplayed the stock market crash into the computer problem and Control is starting to distrust it. When she tries to catch the suspect on her own in Detroit, John and Root overwhelm her, who try to find Shaw with their help. But it soon becomes clear that Control has long since lost control. Mike Richelli, the US President's chief of staff, receives a visit from Gabriel Hayward, the young mouthpiece of Samaritan who desperately wants to speak to his boss.

John and Root have been looking for Shaw for almost three days. A vague trail leads them to the small town of Maple in upstate New York. There they discover that Samaritan began to take control six months ago and manipulate people like laboratory rats. The mayor and chief of police have been replaced, uncomfortable city councilors have been sidelined, the former textile factory is now producing micro-GPS trackers. They take up the fight with Samaritan and their agents in hopes of finding Shaw still alive. Harold supports them logistically from New York and has to help Detective Fusco, who is dedicated to the new number. This is the seemingly harmless Albert Weiss, who is only visiting New York. Dani Silva, who no longer works for internal investigations, but for the organized crime department, is also watching him. She lost an important witness in a gang trial and sees a connection with Weiss. Reluctantly, she lets Fusco help her, but in the end she learns to appreciate the value of new partners.

Shaw is nowhere to be found and Root cannot be reached to find her. Harold is overtaken by a side effect of his cover identity, in which Professor Whistler is named as a juror. His attempt to evade the time-consuming business is apparently thwarted by the machine, because the next candidate for a rescue mission is right next to him on the jury. It is retired English teacher Emma Wake. In a clear parallel to the classic film The Twelve Jurors , Harold is ultimately very alone in his view of the guilt or innocence of the accused and is confronted with the displeasure of the eleven co-jurors. Together with Zoe Morgan, John researches the background to the murder case before the court, because it soon becomes clear that someone in the background wants to influence the verdict with all possible means. Meanwhile, Fusco is investigating the whereabouts of three missing witnesses who appear to belong to Elias' network. John and Harold no longer wanted to involve the detective in their dangerous activities, but he makes the decision himself. John begins to consult his therapist Dr. Visiting Iris Campbell.

John takes a part-time job as a security guard at the most popular Internet search engine "fetch and retrieve". Anna Mueller works here, who has been identified by the machine as the new client. Apparently, Harold's system is gradually succeeding again in locating people at risk in good time, despite the surveillance by Samaritan. Anna also has a part-time job: she fights in the mixed martial arts ring after work. It is unclear whether their problems are related to work or leisure. Harold finds a new poster with a Nautilus puzzle. He follows in the footsteps of Claire Mahoney, the former client who, despite his help, decided to join Samaritan and thus became a Samaritan agent. She is now disaffected and asks him for help in escaping when she is shot by a sniper. Harold can hide them in a funeral home. Claire offers him a flash drive with the source code of Samaritan and her cooperation in its destruction. Harold has to decide if he can trust Claire or she's just a decoy from Samaritan to finally take him and the team off. In the end, root intervention decides everything.

The company is owned by Caleb Phipps, the genius programmer whom Harold was able to stop suicide as a substitute teacher in high school two years ago. Perhaps this is a chance to find allies against Samaritan. John and Harold try to help Rose Harper. It soon turns out, however, that her name is neither that nor an innocent college student. Instead, she herself conjured up the danger she is in now and thinks she doesn't need any help. In an attempt to pit the Mexican Parral drug cartel and the Brotherhood gangsters against each other, her college friend Trey threatens to come under the wheels. So she reluctantly accepts support from Detective Riley and Fusco. John gets in the way of Brotherhood Kingpin Dominic again, which annoys him. Harold goes to a psychiatrist, supposedly to get over the death of his friend and business partner, Nathan Ingram. But the new target is the therapist, Shane Edwards. He treats victims with traumatic experiences free of charge, which for Harold conjures up darkest memories. In retrospect, you can see how he sought revenge in 2010 after the government carried out a bomb attack on Nathan that left Nathan himself crippled. His target was Alicia Corwin, the government liaison officer to the IFT - the developer of the "machine". After handing over to the government, some of the people involved in it died from accidents or attacks in order to keep their existence a secret. Shane Edwards also seems to be on a vengeance campaign. Not only does he treat his patient, he also persecutes their tormentors. Detective Fusco would love to let him have his own way to help justice on the jumps. Edward's wife was murdered eight years ago and the convicted perpetrator has now been released, which explains why the machine classified the psychiatrist as endangered or dangerous. John also meets his therapist Iris Campbell and takes her out to dinner - not without ulterior motives.

At the same time, Harold receives the names of the two gang bosses as the new person of interest - certainly because they now want to finally kill each other. When trying to bring Elias, who lives underground, to safety, John and Fusco get caught between the front lines and in the hands of Dominic. In Washington, Control, the head of the anti-terrorist agents, is on the hunt for smuggled Samaritan spies in her organization. Harold had opened her eyes to the fact that Samaritan also uses his information for his own purposes and makes them a tool. She found out that in the coming week, on May 6, 2015, a large-scale campaign by Samaritan is imminent. Root suddenly receives a call from Shaw, who has been missing for months and is believed to be dead, asking for help. Although she realizes that it is probably a trap by Samaritan, she must follow the trail and Harold cannot fail her. That brings the two directly to the New York command center of Decima Technologies and confronts the machine with a difficult decision.

May 6, 2015, Samaritan's day of "cleansing" has come. Control, the head of the ISA in Washington, fears an attack that is just as large as that of the eradication of Vigilance, which gave Samaritan access to the government's surveillance data. She suspects that Decima Technologies wants to get even more freedom and money for its control machinery. She tries to force John Greer to cancel the cleanup. Root and Harold in New York get a direct connection to the machine, which is circled by Samaritan nationwide. It was not sent to a new server bunker, but rather hidden decentrally in the entire US energy network. Samaritan is now triggering grid overloads and blackouts in order to wipe them out. In a race against time, Root and Harold are looking for support to get the machine to a safe hiding place in good time. John and Detective Fusco and Elias are still hostages of Dominic, who wants to lure Harold to him. With unexpected support, they break free and arrest Dominic and Elias. With the help of a compression program, Harold was able to save the source code of the machine and save it on memory chips with battery supply in a case. With that, he and John are on their way to their secret base in the old subway station, pursued by Samaritan's agents. Since the Samaritan's computer system cannot recognize them thanks to the new identities, the henchmen use police methods such as facial recognition and search calls to search for them. Root is also on the run from the agents and tries to escape with the help of old underworld contacts. Detective Fusco has the internal investigation of the police and the FBI on his neck because after his successful arrest, the gang bosses Elias and Dominic were both shot while trying to escape. In retrospect, it becomes clear why Harold put his machine in chains in 2006, which he regrets today. He cannot forgive John and Harold for failing to share their knowledge of the background to the increasing numbers of suicides and missing people with him, and he leaves the team. Since Fusco is the only one without a cover identity and also with a son, Harold still considers it too dangerous to inform him about Samaritan. Meanwhile, Root tries hard to find Sameen Shaw. She forces the machine to help her through increasingly risky behavior. That leads her to a radio show discussing conspiracy theories. Your presenter Max Greene has discovered a radio code on an outdated radio frequency and one of his listeners, ex-military Warren Franco, is trying to decipher it. This puts them on Samaritan's hit list because the artificial intelligence uses these signals to control its agents. John and Root both try to save. Root can use the signals to send Shaw a message in her still-unknown prison. There Samaritan continues to try to confuse Sameen so that she can no longer distinguish between reality and simulation in order to turn them into a tool. He is a convicted felon who has just been released from prison. The machine had identified him, along with dozens of others, as a person to be checked when it restarted, just before he was recruited by Samaritan. With the help of Elias, Detective Fusco follows the leads to the murdered in the demolished house, which also lead him to Jeff Blackwell. Meanwhile, Sameen Shaw makes a new attempt to escape, encouraged by Roots' message. Samaritan's plans go much further than the local epidemic suggests.

Nobody is unharmed in the ultimate showdown. The machine as well as Harold are ready to sacrifice themselves in order to free humanity from the rule of Samaritan. With roots voice and personality, the machine contacts the team members and supports them.
