The first broadcast of the first season was from September 22, 2011 to May 17, 2012 on the US broadcaster CBS . The German-language premiere of the first 20 episodes and the last two episodes sent the German pay-TV transmitter RTL Crime from 14 August to 25 December 2012, however, on 1 January 2013. The 21 episode was the free TV - station RTL erstausgestrahlt on 27 December 2012th

The Afghanistan soldier Joey Durban is identified by the machine as a new "Person of Interest". Finch and Reese quickly find out that Durban is now robbing banks in New York together with other former front-line soldiers after completing the war. There he learns, however, that the motive is far more than financial difficulties and that Durban is actually being eaten up by feelings of guilt. In addition, the mysterious client "Elias" seems to have his fingers in the game. The situation comes to a head when not only the gang gets into a conflict, but also recognizes the ambitious homicide investigator Carter Reese as the "man in the suit" and wants to arrest them.

But shortly afterwards the two learn that Megan also had a motive for murdering Benton. In search of the answer to the question of who will be the “perpetrator” and who will be the “victim” in this conflict, Detective Carter is still on their necks, who, after the break-in of the NYPD evidence room, new clues in the case of the “man in the Suit ”. When Reese asks his informant Lionel Fusco to keep an eye on Carter's investigation, he gets in the way of a Mexican gang boss who is currently trying to kill the corrupt police officer for a past drug robbery.

Meanwhile, Fusco tries to keep Detective Carter away from them, which according to new information in their investigation turns out to be a complicated undertaking.

If the pay is right, the attractive Zoe Morgan uses her contacts and talents to help a wide variety of people out of dangerous situations. When she listened to a tape during one of her actions, through which she received details about illegal operations of a pharmaceutical company, she herself fell into the line of fire of criminals and the machine identified her as the new "person of interest". Reese gets up close and personal with the young lady by posing as her new chauffeur. The case also gets a personal component when Finch believes he has discovered parallels to a previous unsolved case. Meanwhile, the corpse of an ex-gangster puzzles Detective Carter. During her investigation, she comes across the name "Elias" again and is promptly involved in an exchange of fire.

While trying to save the school teacher Charlie Burton, who was recognized by the machine as a new "Person of Interest", Reese gets into a lead-filled argument with a couple of hit men from the Russian mafia. Burton had got caught between the lines of rival gangs when he saw how the Russians, with the brutal murder of an enemy mafioso, wanted to take revenge on the new underworld great Elias for recently having several of their men executed in order to slowly make theirs District to take over. On their escape from the killers, Reese and Burton flee to a block of flats that is controlled by Bulgarian drug traffickers. There the contact with them breaks off. In order to be able to help the two of them somehow, Finch arranges a meeting between himself and Lionel Fusco, who had recently investigated Elias with Carter.

Tracking him down turns out to be a lot more complicated, however, as Kohl moves across New York on a relentless vendetta, leaving a trail of dead. In doing so, he not only attracts the attention of the NYPD, but also that of the German Federal Intelligence Service and embroils everyone involved in a confusing charade that only begins to become clearer when Reese learns the actual reasons for Kohl's retaliatory strikes.

After one of the four people is found dead in their apartment, Reese, Finch and Fusco split up among the other three and try to prevent anything worse in an emergency. When a second person dies in a bomb attack and John manages to uncover the background, it is almost too late: his former colleagues, who thought he was dead, have tracked him down and want to kill him. Now only Carter can save his life.

Alfred Hitchcock would have enjoyed this case : While he is busy curing his injuries, Reese, armed with a wheelchair and binoculars, has to take a closer look at the caretaker of the building complex, Ernie Trask, from his new apartment, as he is next is on Finch's list. After the two find out that Trask has just bought an unregistered weapon on the black market, the two assume that he is the perpetrator and not the victim. They believe they have discovered his victim in Lily Thorpton, a young cook. When the machine in the meantime determined another "Person of Interest", Finch takes the opportunity to let Detective Carter in on their case. Using a fake telephone connection list, he lures her into a restaurant, where he introduces her to the desperate Derek Watson, the machine's next number. Will she take responsibility and settle the case or will she betray them to John's CIA colleagues after all?

According to the machine, the young lawyer Andrea Gutierrez will either fall victim to a crime in the near future or commit one herself. Reese and Finch try to find out what's going to happen and, as the first test of confidence, involve Detective Carter in their investigation. Fusco is unaware of this new partnership and is slowly becoming suspicious of Carter's strange behavior. While an unknown giant is already pointing the gun at Miss Gutierrez, Reese tries to finally get to know his mysterious partner a little better.

Reese takes on the case of Scott Powell. The family man has been unemployed for eight months and has well exceeded his credit limit. Because he recently applied for a gun license for a rifle, he and Finch believe he is a potential assassin and in fact they have to intervene shortly afterwards to rescue the MP. However, it turns out that Powell was used by an unknown person as a scapegoat for Delancey's murder. Now Scott is being held by the FBI for murder. Since Reese believes that the masterminds of the plot will soon also pull their decoy out of circulation, he must try to free Powell from police custody. Meanwhile, Harold struggles with an annoying hacker who seems to be superior to him in every way. When it gets into his encrypted network, he asks Zoe Morgan for help.

But apparently he's not the only one with these methods, because as Finch finds out shortly afterwards, Cahill is an undercover cop from the NYPD and is on to a big cause. That delivers him to his corrupt colleagues at HR, the underground organization of corrupt police officers from whom he had actually broken away. On Reese's behalf, he smuggles back into the gang.

A new number leads Reese and Finch on the trail of slippery Adam Saunders, a young, aspiring stock trader at a large Wall Street investment firm. To learn more about Saunders, Reese pretends to work as an asset manager for a large investor. However, he and Finch quickly realize that they are not the only ones interested in Saunders. A US financial regulator is also on his heels. This involves allegations of insider trading and doing business with a dubious company. And that's not all: while Saunders is having a secret affair with his supervisor, someone taps his phone and eventually even tries to murder him. In search of the puller, they get caught between the fronts - and Detective Carter meets an old friend.

The truth turns out to be far more shocking, however: the new "Person of Interest" is a six-month-old baby named Leila. Who would like to harm her? Their research leads them to a dangerous trafficking ring from eastern Europe.

When he and Reese begin an investigation, however, they quickly find out that it is exactly the opposite: Jordan is not a person who has two lives. It is much more about two people who share an identity. But which of the two is the “person of interest” in danger, and who is just trying to pretend to be the other?

This time the machine spits out several numbers at once: The five heads of the New York mafia families - Caparelli, Zambrano, Grifoni, Basile and Gianni Moretti Junior - will be personally involved in a crime in the near future. Reese and Finch draw the most obvious conclusion from this: In order to unite the Cosa Nostra under his leadership, Elias apparently wants to eliminate their previous leaders, including his half-brother. A first attempt to protect one of the mafia bosses from Elias fails. After Reese couldn't convince him to accept him as protection for his life, all he can do is watch the mafioso and his bodyguards blow up. Carter finds out that Elias invested the whopping four million dollars in hiring people for his campaign, making a pact with HR officers. When she and Fusco take the other Dons into protective custody, Elias has her son kidnapped. Reese makes one last attempt at rescue.

When Finch and Reese get Tommy Clay's number, they assume that the well-behaved husband and father of a nine-year-old son who makes a living at a money-transport company is likely to be the victim of a robbery. So Reese joins Tommy and Murray Langston's team, the driver. After the troops loaded two suitcases of platinum on the truck, an explosive charge exploded on the street. The car tips over and comes under fire. While Reese is trying to help Murray, Tommy suddenly points his gun at them. Thanks to his bulletproof vest, Reese survived the ambush - unlike Murray, who is fatally hit by two bullets. Reese discovers that Clay wants to run away with his girlfriend, the waitress Ashley, after he has sold the platinum to "HR" - a dangerous plan.

On John's birthday he gets a day off from Harold, in addition to a small box with a key in it. The case of Sarah Jennings, who has to flee from her violent husband, would rather be done by Finch without Reese. The story is too reminiscent of John's old friend Jessica, who was murdered by her husband Peter, who then tried to cover up with a car accident. This story is told through the joint research of Detective Carter and FBI Agent Donnelly. Sarah, on the other hand, also has the problem that her husband Brad works at the United States Marshals Service and does not shy away from using the whole agency to hunt down his wife with false accusations and an arrest warrant. When Reese finds out, neither Finch nor Carter can stop him.

After Fusco was unsuccessful in finding out more about Finch's background, Reese starts monitoring his partner again - and finds some interesting clues. Before he can pursue this, however, the next number arrives. The machine directs you to a financial analyst named Henry Peck, but who is by no means what he appears to be. On closer inspection, the financial advice turns out to be a camouflaged NSA listening station. Peck is an analyst , but on behalf of the government. On the basis of his reports, various terrorist attacks could be prevented because the masterminds could be pulled out of circulation in time. When Peck realizes that these successes came about without any action on his part because someone had subsequently incorporated the names of the masterminds into his reports, he tries to get to the bottom of the matter. He is thus on the way to discover the existence of the machine and should therefore be killed.

This time Reese and Finch got the number from Caroline Turing who, as Reese learns from Fusco, is to be eliminated by the corrupt police officers of the organization "HR" on behalf of a rich patient . Reese tries to be close to the attractive psychologist, while Finch and Zoe Morgan try to filter out of Turing's patients who might be most interested in their death. Reese succeeds in preventing the first assassination attempt on Caroline, but the two can then be seen on a surveillance camera, which Special Agent Donnelly is now having the FBI monitor across the board in order to finally catch his wanted "man in a suit". A wild race begins between the contract killers, who still want to murder Turing and would now like to accept Reese as collateral damage, and the FBI teams of Special Agent Donnelly, who are more interested in getting their hands on Reese alive. so that he can still testify against his former CIA comrades.

Finch finds himself in the clutches of the hacker Root, who wants to obtain information about his ominous machine. Therefore, she threatens to harm innocent people if he should resist her. In order to save his partner, Reese contacts the machine personally, which then passes a series of incoherent words to him. Only after a while does he realize that this is a code that contains the social security numbers that Finch normally got from the machine. The number that the machine has now given Reese leads him to the former investment banker Leon Tao. However, he seems to have no idea where Harold is. Instead of leading him on the trail of his friend, the machine gave Reese Taos number for completely different reasons: Leon embezzled drug money from an Aryan brotherhood and is now being chased across New York by a bunch of ruthless neo-Nazis. After all, Reese captures the trained Belgian shepherd "Bear" .

Reese still has to fear for Finch's life since he was kidnapped by the hacker Root. Since the machine gave him the clue about a 14-year-old girl named Hannah who disappeared in Texas many years ago, he suspects that Root is hiding behind this girl. So he tries to get Hannah's lead in Texas with Detective Carter. What he cannot suspect is that Root now not only has Harold under her control, but also the Special Counsel Denton Weeks, whom she tortures in front of Finch to find out where the machine is. Reese manages to track down Root and free Harold.

After being freed from Root, Harold continues to suffer from the consequences of the kidnapping. He finds security in the German shepherd Bear, whom Reese has put at his side as a guardian. Meanwhile, the machine delivers a new number. This time the "Person of Interest" is the daughter of a Brazilian ambassador who is said to have ambitions for the presidency in his home country. That also makes his daughter a possible target. Reese sneaks into the embassy as a bodyguard to protect the young lady. Which is not so easy, however, since he is a highly unruly person.

A new act leads Finch and Reese to Riley Cavanaugh, who works as a thug for Irish mafia gangster George Massey. At first everything looks like one thing is clear: Riley and Massey's son Eddie are supposed to silence the rebellious waitress Annie. Reese wants to prevent that. But things are very different than initially thought: Riley is actually dating Annie and has been thinking about leaving Massey's organization for a long time. Massey knows about it and wants his son to kill the renegade. But Riley is faster. He kills Eddie and goes on the run with Annie. When Massey puts a million dollar bounty on the two of them, Reese suddenly has both hands full to protect them from an onslaught of contract killers. To do this, they even have to ask gang boss Elias for help.

Maxine Angelis is a dedicated, if somewhat overzealous investigative journalist, whom the machine draws Reese and Finch's attention to. The two suspect that Maxine could be in danger because of one of two big stories the hardworking reporter has to deal with: First, she has just uncovered a case of illegal campaign funding in the running for the office of New York mayor. On the other hand, she tries to find out who is the big boss behind the secret organization "HR" . The FBI has smashed large parts of the organization with Fusco's anonymous help, but the chief agent Donnelly has not yet got hold of the mastermind. When Angelis actually falls into the sights of bloodthirsty killers, a rescue operation turns out to be difficult, because the reporter also researches the "man in the suit". In order to get them inconspicuously out of the line of fire, Harold arranges a date between John and Maxine, which, however, does not turn out too romantic during the course of the evening.

The most boring guy in all of New York is recognized by the machine as a new "Person of Interest". Graham Wyler runs a respectable tool dealer and leads a quiet, normal family life in the suburbs with his wife and daughter. John and Harold are therefore initially unable to explain at all what is interesting about Graham and how his model life could provide clues to an impending crime. However, upon further investigation, Finch discovers that the real Graham Wyler has been dead for 15 years. To find out who the man they are tailing really is, Reese and Zoe Morgan move into the house across the street as a married couple and get in touch with the Wyler family. In doing so, he uncovered a secret that could keep the family apart forever.

Both Finch and Reese are amazed when the machine gives them a social security number for the first time. John arrives just in time to again save Leon Tao from a few Russian mafiosi whose money he had embezzled. As the machine spits out a second number shortly afterwards, the two Tao offer a hideout under the watchful eyes of Bear in their secret hiding place while they meet the heart surgeon Dr. Dedicate to Madeleine Enright. She doesn't seem to be in any relevant trouble at first, until Harold happens to find out that she is being blackmailed by a former MI6 agent. Should she not let her patient, the managing director of an energy company, jump over the edge during the next operation, her unsuspecting wife will be eliminated by a sniper. Meanwhile, Carter tracks down Mark Snow, who is being rushed through New York by an unknown client wearing a bomb vest.

This time the machine sends two numbers to John and Harold at the same time, that of Daniel Drake and that of Drake's wife Sabrina. The two run a large publishing house that has just published a book about a dangerous right-wing militia. Finch therefore initially believes that the couple is in danger from precisely this side. In fact, the threat to the publisher couple is much closer and much more complicated than expected. So the machine engages in a dialogue with Samaritan via Root, who in turn uses Gabriel Hayward, a highly talented elementary school student, as a mouthpiece. Samaritan announces that it will eliminate the machine and its agents as competition and then take control of humanity in order to solve all of its problems such as war, hunger or crime. Flashbacks show John Greer's past as an MI6 agent in the 1970s that led him to bring Samaritan to power.
