Pesch is a district on the left bank of the Rhine in the northwest of Cologne in the borough of Chorweiler .

Pesch borders Cologne-Esch in the north, Cologne-Lindweiler in the east and Cologne-Ossendorf in the south. Federal motorway 1 runs between Pesch and Ossendorf . In the west of Pesch lies the Pescher See and in the north the Escher See.

history

Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth and the Donatus Chapel

Pesch was first mentioned in a document in 1312. In 1609, Abraham Hogenberg named four courtyards “Besch” in his plan of Cologne and the surrounding area. Etymologically, the name Pesch can be derived either from the Latin word pascuum - willow - or from the word bush. In 1657 three further farmsteads and four house locations were announced next to the Krischhof (war yard). Opposite the war court is the baroque Donatus Chapel. It is one of the oldest buildings in Pesch and is dated on its lintel with the year 1774. In 1794, Pesch was occupied by French troops and assigned to Mairie Stommeln in the canton of Dormagen. This canton belonged to the Arrondissement de Cologne in the Département de la Roer . In 1815 Pesch came to the Kingdom of Prussia and to the mayor's office of Stommeln, which was renamed to Amt Stommeln in 1927. Since 1934 Pesch belonged to the Pulheim office . In 1964, Pesch came to the Sinnersdorf community together with Auweiler and Esch . After the regional reform , Pesch was incorporated into Cologne on January 1, 1975.

For centuries Pesch consisted of only a few farms. This changed from the 1960s, when the town, which at that time was still outside the Cologne city limits, took on the character of a satellite town : A mixture of single-family houses and several apartment blocks, some of which consisted of high-rise buildings, not far from the newly built or newly planned motorways A 1 and A 57 . This planning well before the incorporation to Cologne also explains the traffic connection to the local transport network: There is no tram connection and at that time - in contrast to the Cologne settlements Bocklemünd / Mengenich and Neubrück , which were built around the same time - no routes were kept free for it.

Pescher See

There are numerous quarry ponds (former gravel pits ) around Pesch , which serve as a local recreation area. When Pesch, Esch and Auweiler were incorporated, the city of Cologne committed itself to plan and build this recreation area. This is how the “Stöckheimer Höfe” leisure area was created, in which the former quarry ponds of Pesch, Esch / Auweiler and Pulheim are embedded.

There are also numerous opportunities to do sports in Pesch. The Pesch-based sports clubs BC Köln Pesch 04 (basketball), TTC Pesch (table tennis) and FC Pesch (soccer) are always looking for children, young people and adults who are interested in basketball, table tennis or soccer.
