Peste & Sida (pt. Plague and AIDS ', onomatopoeic also:, pesticide') is the name of a Portuguese punk rock - band from Lisbon .

history

1986-1996

The group was founded in the summer of 1986 and gave their first concert that same year. In 1987 they took part in the fourth band competition of the Rock Rendez-Vous ( 4º Concurso de Música Moderna do Rock Rendez-Vous ). At the same time, the independent label Transmédia made it possible for them to release their first album. In addition to contemporary punk rock, Veneno (German: 'Gift') was mainly influenced by the style of the band The Clash .

The Portuguese subsidiary PolyGram signed the band and re-released their now sold-out debut album before releasing their second LP in 1989. At Portem-se bem (eng: 'behave yourself') the band showed a variety of influences. The Ramones- style Sol da Caparica (German: 'Sun of Caparica') became popular, as did the cheerful anti- heroin song Chuta Cavalo (German: 'Shoot horse'), which featured soccer choirs and a fast one Rhythm stood out. As opening act for Public Image Ltd. and Xutos & Pontapés also increased their popularity in the music scene.

In 1989 the maxi single Homem de Sorte (Eng: 'Man of Happiness') was released, a 12 "single with the reggae piece Reggae Sida on the B-side. Singer Almendra then left the band. Peste & Sida broke up However, the third album was released in 1990, Peste & Sida é que é! (German for example: 'Peste & Sida are it!'). In addition to the hilarious, socially critical Vamos ao trabalho (German: 'Let's go to Arbeit '), which was vaguely reminiscent of Toy Dolls pieces, or the fast hardcore punk piece Morte aos Xibos , which became known in the punk scene , influences from reggae and rap were audible. Her version of a José Afonso was also noticeable Piece.

The coverage in the country's media, especially the music magazines, made the band known to a larger audience, as did their occasional television appearances. They were now considered an established band. After their album Eles Andam Aí (English: 'They are among us') in 1992, a Best Of was released in 1993, but it was only a compilation of their second and third albums. In the meantime the band had started to give concerts under the name Despe e Siga in smaller clubs and bars for fun , where they played idiosyncratic versions of well-known rock 'n' roll , ska and punk with new Portuguese lyrics throughout -Hits played. The band members now increasingly shifted their activities to this project, so that Peste & Sida ceased as a band. San Payo, who had also played for Despe e Siga for a time, wanted to continue to lead the band. When the other band members preferred the new project, he left in 1996. With that, Peste & Sida were considered dissolved.

Since 2002

In 2002, the Portuguese Universal subsidiary published A Verdadeira História (German: 'The True Story'), alluding to the socially critical Pest & Sida piece A Verdadeira História de Alcides Pinto , a best of compilation of all their publications. Luís Varatojo put the compilation together, which brought him into conflict with San Payo, who accused Varatojo of going it alone.

The renewed interest in Peste & Sida, and the now flagging activities of Despe e Siga, then brought the band back together. Founding member Varatojo, however, did not return to the band, on the one hand because of the differences with San Payo, on the other hand because of his own other projects, according to A Naifa . After a few concerts, the band released a new album in 2004 with Tóxico (German: 'Toxic'). Original singer Almendra, who sang in the punk band Punk Sinatra at the same time, has been a regular guest singer at Peste & Sida concerts since 2003, until he officially became the band's singer again in 2005, and for the first time again at Cai no Real in 2007 sang on recordings of the group. After leaving again in 2010, the band continued their activities as a trio. In 2011 they recorded the media-acclaimed album Não há Crise (Eng .: 'There is no crisis') in the formation and continued to perform live, around 2012 at the Festa do Avante! .

After the band's 25th anniversary, a book was published in 2012 that traced the band's history and was presented by the band at an anniversary concert. a. with former band members like Almendra or Orlando Cohen. A release of the concert on DVD is planned. As an accompanying CD to the book, Portuguese bands such as Xutos & Pontapés , Galandum Galundaina , The Gilberts Feed Band or Tara Perdida , along with a number of underground groups such as Albert Fish , have recorded versions of Peste & Sida songs.
