action

17-year-old Eva Wild lives with her grandfather Martin in modest circumstances in a rented apartment. When one day they can no longer pay the rent, they are unceremoniously put on the street. Eva sees a few coins being thrown to a street musician and thinks that she could also earn money with them. And so she becomes a street musician herself. She plays the accordion while grandfather Martin sings. Her involuntary encounter with a fugitive thief leads to the fact that he lures her into a corner of the house and forces Eva to take off her dress in order to exchange clothes with him. Then the police wanted crook piles up. Suddenly Eva, whose only dress this was, has to walk around with a boy's outfit that is much too wide. She decides to make a virtue out of necessity, henceforth calls herself Peter, and gets a job as a “newspaper boy”. Clever as she is in her will to survive, Eva screams the headline “Baby exterminates whole family!” And suddenly sells a lot more leaves than all the competition. Too bad that the corresponding story does not appear in the entire sheet! The indignant Dr. Bendler, a young doctor, who then approaches Eva. As a result of the resulting dispute, there is an accident caused by Eva alias Peter.

The wild Eva is then dragged to court and introduces herself there as "Peter Wild". Peter / Eva is sentenced to a fine, which he / she cannot pay in view of the precarious economic conditions in the Wild house. Dr. Bendler didn't want it to come to that and found him / her a job with Mr. Zöllner, the owner of a garage with an attached gas station. One day a car pulls up to the gas station. Eva immediately recognizes in the driver the fugitive thief who forced her to swap clothes, and for this she strongly reproaches him. The crook then causes his elegant companion to take off her evening dress again and gives it to Eva. When "Peter" now wants to put on the evening dress, of all people, the handsome doctor shows up and wonders why the young lady looks so unbelievably similar to the garage boy "Peter". But Bendler quickly sees through her character, while the garage and gas station owner Zöllner reveals to his “apprentice” that it was the young doctor who had worked for “him”. Eva, who has long since fallen in love with Robert Bendler, wants to give him a hand when she learns that his practice is anything but going well. She goes for Dr. Bendler without further ado to catch customers.

A festival is being held at the upscale Astoria Club. Dr. Bendler is also invited and appears with his girlfriend Mary. He also asked “Peter”, who now believes to be very close to her dreams. A pearl necklace is stolen at the party, and since no one from the lower class is present except "Peter", Bendler immediately suspects the culprit in the "boy" from the gas station. In order not to return Eva to police custody again, he unceremoniously takes the girl home in the disguise of a boy. Eva learns the real reason for this and feels unjustly denigrated as a thief. She is injured and has an argument with Robert. But he takes her in his arms and kisses Eva. When Mary suddenly appears, Eva runs away and returns to the gas station. Zöllner has meanwhile fired the fake Peter because he had hoped in vain for a rendezvous with Peter's "sister" Eva. Now Eva alias “Peter” and both grandfathers are left with nothing and pack their few remaining belongings onto a handcart. Suddenly a car stops next to them. Dr. Bendler, who had been looking for his Eva the whole time, and finally takes her in his arms.

Production notes and trivia

Peter was created in the Hunna studios in Budapest and was premiered on December 20, 1934 in Vienna. The mass start was on January 4, 1935. Given the strong Jewish participation (director Kosterlitz, producer Joe Pasternak , screenwriter Felix Joachimson and the leading actors Gaal, Jaray and Bressart) the film was not released in Hitler's Germany. The German premiere took place in the GDR on August 8, 1952, eight years later the film was shown for the first time on GDR television. There the film was given the new title Peter, the girl from the gas station .

The Jewish actor and cabaret artist Fritz Grünbaum , who emigrated from Germany to Austria in 1933, made his last, only seconds-short appearance here as a club guest calling for a doctor. Gerhard Goldbaum , like Grünbaum Jude and fled Hitler's Germany in 1933, took over the tone. Both men were killed by the Nazis in concentration camps during World War II. Another concentration camp victim of the German National Socialists was Otto Wallburg , who was given the not unimportant supporting role of the garage owner customs officer.

Márton Vincze , who was well employed in German-language Hungarian film in the last pre-war years, designed the film structures here too.

music

The following songs by Nikolaus Brodszky were played:

  • Today I feel so wonderful
  • The world is strange
  • As beautiful as you …

The lyrics were written by Fritz Rotter . These titles were published by the Viennese music publishers Sirius and Bristol AG.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: “Hardly original, but prepared with effective ideas, with a grateful role for the Gáal, who, in addition to the well-known merits, also puts the ability under ice to perform parodic chansons excellently. Jaray is a likeable opponent, the comedians are also excellent. The direction does effective detailed work, the music is snappy. "

The Österreichische Film-Zeitung wrote: “Franziska Gaal also shows herself to be an excellent actress in her latest film“ Peter ”. You see the artist from a new side, she has to play the role of a teenage boy and does so with a lot of humor and convincing truthfulness. All her movements, her mine game [sic!], Are copied from reality. (...) Hermann Kosterlitz provided the Universal film with many nice directorial ideas. "

On film.at it says: “Peter is the prime example of a socially romantic comedy based on the American model, in which elements of slapstick, over-the-top pun, outstanding actors and stars vie with a fast-paced story. In 1935 he won the prize in the category "Best Comedy of the Year" at the International Film Exhibition in Moscow. "
