Peter and Paul Church in Züllsdorf

The Protestant Peter and Paul Church is a listed church building in Züllsdorf , a district of the city of Herzberg (Elster) in the southern Brandenburg district of Elbe-Elster . Here the building can be found in the center of the village on the village green. The building is listed in the local register of monuments under registration number 09135312.

Building description and history

The current church was inaugurated in 1857 as a successor to two previous buildings that were located here. The church is a massive hall building made of brick, which was faced with field stones. In the east of the nave , a slightly lower three-sided choir was added. In the west there is a tower with an almost square floor plan. The building was built according to plans by the Torgau building inspector Dolscius. In terms of architectural style, the church is classified as neo-Gothic .

The interior of the church is characterized by a flat wooden ceiling, a horseshoe gallery and stalls dating from the time of construction. The floor consists of sandstone slabs . There is a five-part rib vault in the choir. The church is equipped, among other things, with a wooden, chalice-shaped baptism, which, like the church, dates from 1857. The two bronze bells of the building were cast in Andreas Herold's bell foundry in Dresden . These date from 1676 and 1694, with the older bell originally hanging in the village church of Wiederau . Both bells are, like the church, in the monument register of the state of Brandenburg.

The organ in the church was created in 1857 by the Eilenburg organ builder Nicolaus Schrickel (1820-1893). It has a mechanical drawer , two manuals and fourteen registers .

The Church in Züllsdorf now belongs to the parish Rehfeld in the parish of Bad Liebenwerda the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . In addition to Rehfeld and Züllsdorf, the parish also includes Löhsten , Beyern , Fermerswalde and Kölsa .

Dunning and remembrance

Immediately next to the church is a memorial to the victims of the villagers who died in the First and Second World Wars . The memorial consists of a stele with a crowned eagle on a three-tiered base . The names of the fallen are inscribed on the sides.

On the lower front of the memorial there is the inscription: "Your brave heroes who fell in the World War 1914–1918 - The grateful community of Züllsdorf." Another plaque with the inscription "In memory of the victims of World War II" was attached to the base.
