Peter Dickinson (musician)
Peter Dickinson (born November 15, 1934 in Lytham St Annes , Lancashire , England ) is a British composer , pianist and music critic .

Peter Dickinson attended Leys School in Cambridge , then was assistant organist at Queens' College in Cambridge and went to New York City for three years . There he studied composition with Bernard Wagenaar at the Juilliard School , where his first compositions were performed. He worked as a freelance music critic and pianist at the New York City Ballet (including for George Balanchine ) and taught for a year at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey .
After returning to the UK, he taught at a college in Chelsea and taught at the University of Birmingham . In 1974 he went to Keele University , where he built a center for American music. On the subject, he conducted readings, published articles and reviews, and wrote features for BBC Radio 3 . In 1988 Melvyn Bragg's “South Bank Show” showed a one-hour documentary about him, which also included the first television release of the composition London Rags with members of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the London Brass Ensemble, which had already been dissolved at that time .
From 1991 to 1997 Peter Dickinson had a Chair at Goldsmiths College of the University of London , after he was until 2004 head of the music department at the Institute of American Studies, University of London. In 1996 he and Bernarr Rainbow founded the "Bernarr Rainbow Trust" to support education in music, which awards an annual prize for music teachers. In 1999 he was honored with an honorary doctorate in music from Keele University .
Peter Dickinson performed with his sister, mezzo-soprano Meriel Dickinson (* 1940) for about thirty years and made recordings with her. He lives in Suffolk .

Peter Dickinson has written several commissioned compositions, including an organ concerto for Simon Preston (1971), a piano concerto for Howard Shelley (1984), a violin concerto for Ernst Kovacic (1986), organ variations for Jennifer Bate and pieces for David Munrow . The album Peter Dickinson: Piano Voices and Brass , released in 2005, features works from 1974 to 2004 performed by Peter Dickinson, Elisabeth Söderström , The King's Singers , the Swedish ensemble “Solna Brass” and the pianist Eric Parkin .
