Peter Felten (born May 4, 1965 in Calw ) is a German diplomat .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1984, doing military service and training to become a banker , Felten began studying economics at the universities of Augsburg and Lyon in 1987 , from which he graduated with a degree in economics. He joined the Foreign Service in May 1993 . After training at the diplomatic school in Bonn-Ippendorf and completing the career examination for the higher service, he has been employed at various missions abroad and at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Berlin since 1994 :

  • 1995 to 1998: Deputy Head of the German Consulate General in Saratov ( Russian Federation )
  • 1998 to 2001: Consultant for human rights at the German Permanent Mission to the United Nations , New York City
  • 2001 to 2004: Speaker in the minutes of the Foreign Office in Berlin
  • 2004 to 2007: Head of Economic Services at the German Embassy in Lisbon ( Portugal )
  • 2007 to 2008: Foreign policy advisor to Siemens AG in Munich
  • 2008 to 2011: Head of the International Cooperation Unit in Humanitarian Aid at the Foreign Office in Berlin

Since July 2011 Peter Felten has been the first ambassador to South Sudan after an embassy was established in Juba after independence . Previously, he was the head of the Khartoum embassy office in Juba. As an ambassador, he also supported the implementation of workshops for the Legislative Assembly of South Sudan by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law . Another focus was the support of internally displaced persons in the Abyei area due to the Sudanese civil war as part of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). He said: “We praise the work and effort of the government of South Sudan to raise resources to provide food aid to the thousands of people who have fled Abyei and to the communities in the north of the country that have taken them in. Our contribution is an expression of the commitment of the German people and the German government to help those people around the world who are dependent on humanitarian aid because of conflicts or natural disasters. "

In August 2013, David Schwake followed him as ambassador to South Sudan. Felten then became permanent representative at the German Embassy Islamabad in Pakistan from 2013 to 2016 .

Peter Felten is married to the Russian philologist and author Irina Felten (* 1974). He is a Catholic and a member of the parish of Mater Dolorosa (Berlin-Lankwitz) .
