Peter Fulde

Peter Fulde (born April 6, 1936 in Breslau , Lower Silesia Province ) is a German physicist .

Life

Peter Fulde received his PhD from the University of Maryland in 1963 . In 1968 he was appointed professor for theoretical physics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . From 1971 to 1974 he headed the theory group at the Laue-Langevin Institute in Garching . He was then director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart until 1993 , before he took on a director's position at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden until his retirement in 2007 . From 2007 to 2013 he was President and since then has been Honorary President of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics and Distinguished Professor at POSTECH in Pohang (Korea).

His research focuses on the theory of solid state physics . His contributions to the theory of metals , crystal fields in rare earths , electronic correlations and quantum chemistry are particularly noteworthy . The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, which can occur in superconductors , is named after a prediction by Peter Fulde, among others.

His scientific work has resulted in numerous honors; u. a. he is an honorary doctorate at the University of Frankfurt, a member of the Leopoldina (since 1995) and the German Academy of Science and Engineering - acatech and honorary professor of the Polish Academy of Sciences , Wroclaw Department . He is also a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . In 2007 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Free State of Saxony . On June 23, 2009 he was appointed honorary member of the Dresden-Rossendorf Research Center . In 2009 he was awarded the Tsungming Tu Prize . In 2011 he received the Marian Smoluchowski Emil Warburg Physics Prize from the German and Polish Physical Society .

Peter Fulde has been an honorary citizen of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province of the Republic of Korea since 2014 and of the city of Pohang since 2016 .
