Peter Hancock (born July 26, 1955 in Kent ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Bath and Wells in the Church of England since 2014 .

Life

Hancock grew up on the Isle of Wight . He came to Fareham with his family at the age of eleven . He attended Price's School in Fareham. He studied natural sciences ( Natural Sciences ) at Selwyn College of the University of Cambridge . There he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . He received his Master of Arts from the University of Nottingham . In preparation for his priesthood, he attended Oak Hill Theological College in Southgate , London .

In 1990 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1981 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1980 to 1983 as Vicar ( Curate ) at Christ Church, in Portsdown in the Diocese of Portsmouth . From 1983 to 1987 he was vicar ( curate ) at Saint Aldhelm's Church in Radipole and at the Emmanuel Church in the Melcombe Regis parish (Melcombe Regis Team Ministry) in the Diocese of Salisbury .

From 1987 to 1999 he was pastor ( vicar ) of St Wilfrid's Church in Cowplain in the Diocese of Portsmouth. From 1993 to 1999 he was also Country Dean ( Rural Dean ) of Havant . From 1997 to 1999 he was Ehrenkanoniker ( Honorary Canon , Canon) at the Portsmouth Cathedral . In 1999 he became archdeacon ( Archdeacon ; head of a parish) of Meon in the Diocese of Portsmouth; he held this office until he was promoted to bishop. From 2003 to 2006 he was Diocesan Director of Mission.

In June 2010 his appointment as "Bishop of Basingstoke" as suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Winchester in the Church of England was announced. He was ordained bishop on September 21, 2010 in St Paul's Cathedral . His inauguration and enthronement as "Bishop of Basingstoke" took place on October 2, 2010 at Winchester Cathedral .

In December 2013, his appointment as Bishop of Bath and Wells in the Church of England was announced. He succeeded Peter Price , who retired at the end of June 2013. He formally took office in 2014. His official inauguration and enthronement took place in June 2014 at Wells Cathedral .

Peter Hancock is married. The relationship with his wife Jane gave birth to four now grown children: Claire, Richard, Charlotte and William.

His hobbies include swimming , skiing and walking , traveling and exercising (as a spectator). He is particularly interested in political and church affairs in the countries of the Third World , development aid , missionary work and environmental protection . Hancock is a proponent of women's ordination and the ordination of women as bishops .
