Peter James (production designer)

Peter James (born April 14, 1924 , † November 17, 1997 in Dover , England ) was a British film architect .

Life

James began his career on the film staff in 1950 as an uncredited assistant to the art director on the set of the film drama Chance of a Lifetime by Bernard Miles . In numerous of his subsequent engagements, he initially received no credit . James took on various roles, including working in props , art director and production designer. He has worked with directors such as Stanley Kubrick , Richard Attenborough , Sam Peckinpah , John Sturges and John Huston throughout his career .

1973 he worked for Richard Attenborough's film adaptation The young lion together with Don Ashton , John Gray Mark , William Hutchinson and Drake Geoffrey for the Oscar in the category Best Art Direction nominated, but the award went this year to theater . A second nomination for the Oscar came in 1976 ; for John Huston's adventure film The Man Who Wanted to Be King , with Alexandre Trauner and Tony Inglis . The trophy, however, went to Stanley Kubrick's monumental film Barry Lyndon .

Occasionally, James was also active in television, working on a number of television films and series, including Hart But Warm and The Adventures of Dick Turpin .
