Peter Rehder (born April 28, 1843 in Oster- Jork ; † April 25, 1920 in Lübeck ) was a German hydraulic engineer and a Prussian or Lübeck construction officer . As hydraulic engineering director of the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck , he developed the plan for the Elbe-Lübeck Canal .

Life

Born and raised in East Jork, Rehder passed his Abitur at the Athenaeum in Stade and then studied in Hanover . After completing his studies, Rehder entered the Prussian civil service and between 1867 and 1869 initially worked in Emden . In 1869 he moved to Kiel , from where he entered the civil service in Lübeck on March 15, 1875. There he became hydraulic engineering inspector in 1879, hydraulic engineering director in 1888 and finally senior engineering director in 1900 . After 35 years in the civil service in Lübeck, he retired in 1910.

His first significant work for Lübeck was the so-called “2. Trave correction ”, which gave the Trave a minimum waterway depth of 5 meters. In 1884 he presented a plan to expand the port facilities, which was the basis for the port expansion from 1887. From 1888 he was responsible for all hydraulic engineering work in the city. In this function, he suggested the purchase of land on both sides of the Untertrave for industrial settlement.

In this capacity he was on May 31, 1895 for the laying of the foundation stone of the Elbe-Trave Canal in Lübeck. After the blows with the silver hammer by Senator Heinrich Klug , Rehder was the last chief building director to steam the granite stone and took over his work in all forms with the words: “With the big and difficult building, favor and luck remain loyal to me. God rule that. ”Whereupon Mayor Heinrich Theodor Behn spoke the closing words of the event.

His last significant work in the service was the “3. Trave correction ”, which deepened the Trave to 7.5 meters. Even in his retirement, he worked intensively for a connection between the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, which later became the Elbe Lateral Canal . He planned the Lübeck lift bridge ; The Eric Warburg Bridge , which was opened to traffic in 2008, is also based on his initial planning considerations .

The Rehder Bridge in Lübeck is named after him. The bridge keeper's house of the swing bridge (Lübeck) is also named after him as the Peter Rehder House .
