Ludwig Leichtweiß

Ludwig Leichtweiß (born April 5, 1878 in Eberstadt , † July 11, 1958 in Braunschweig ) was a German hydraulic engineer and university professor .

Life

Leichtweiß attended high school in Darmstadt , where he then studied civil engineering at the Technical University from 1899 to 1903 . From 1903 he worked as a government building supervisor ( trainee lawyer ) and from 1907 as a government building master ( assessor ) for the Darmstadt cultural building authority. From 1907 to 1910 he was a government master builder in Neisse . In Stettin he was in charge of port expansion between 1912 and 1917, after which he worked as a hydraulic engineering director in Lübeck until 1925 .

Activity in Braunschweig

In 1925 Leichtweiß received a call to the Technical University of Braunschweig , where he was professor of hydraulic engineering until his retirement in 1947 . He headed the hydraulic engineering laboratory, which was rebuilt in 1939 and named after him as the Leichtweiß Institute in 1953 . He continued lecturing on water, river, canal and dam construction until 1958. Outside of Germany, he was involved in a wide range of planning work, including port expansion in Barcelona and Trelleborg .

He died on July 11, 1958 in Braunschweig.

Honors

Leichtweiß received the plaque of honor from the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1943, an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Berlin in 1952 and the Great Federal Cross of Merit in 1955. Since 1944 he was a full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .
