The main contribution to his hometown was Klug's tireless, imperturbable advocacy for the construction of an Elbe-Trave canal . In this capacity he was on May 31, 1895 for the laying of the foundation stone of the canal in Lübeck. After the blows with the silver hammer by Senator Wolpmann, Senator Klug, followed by the chief building director, Peter Rehder , struck the granite stone and took over his work with the words: “With the big and difficult building, favor and luck remain loyal to me. God govern that. ”From 1896 he was chairman of the sewer construction authority. This life's work was crowned with success and he himself, as mayor, was able to inaugurate the new lifeline of the old Hanseatic city . With this he drove together with the Kaiser and other dignitaries of the city from the Kaisertor in the Lübeck ramparts on the canal to the new Burgtorbrücke in the Senate barge Lubeca . The damming of the Wakenitz was necessary for this section of the route and the penetration of the peninsula in front of the castle gate brought with it the greatest topographical faults, which could only be more or less regulated in terms of urban planning after a long time.

The continued existence of the commercial advanced training school, which was endangered during his directorate, could be averted by his reorganization of the school. The expansion of the savings and loan fund through the Pfennigsparkasse was thanks to him.

Together with Mayor Schön , he made every effort to find a worthy home for the company until they finally found it at Königstrasse 5 .
