Peter Reich von Reichenstein († May 3 or September 6, 1296 ) was Bishop of Basel from 1286 to 1296 .

origin

He came from the Basel-based Reich von Reichenstein family , who were in the service of the Basel prince-bishop, provided six Basel mayors and were wealthy in the canton of Basel-Landschaft , Sundgau , Alsace and the southern Black Forest. His father, Heinrich Reich zu Reichenstein, was mayor of Basel in 1258, his uncle Rudolf held this office in 1262.

Life

Peter is mentioned for the first time as a canon in Basel in 1258 , from 1264 he was archdeacon at Basel Minster , in 1272 canon in Saint-Ursanne and in 1274 as a priest to St. Theodor in Kleinbasel . In 1274 the cathedral chapter elected him bishop of Basel, but Pope Gregor X. refused to confirm him and appointed him provost of the cathedral in Mainz . Heinrich von Isny ​​became bishop in Basel . In 1278/79 Peter studied in Bologna . In 1286 he was elected Archbishop of Mainz , Pope Honorius IV refused the appointment, and Heinrich von Isny ​​became Archbishop. Instead, Peter was appointed Bishop of Basel. During his tenure, he promoted the expansion of the cathedral, granted the citizens of Delsberg and Laufen the rights and freedoms of Basel citizens and confirmed the traditional rights of the Basel guilds. In the conflict with Rainald von Mömpelgard he was supported by King Rudolf I in 1289 , while Peter in turn supported King Adolf of Nassau in the siege of Colmar in 1293 . Peter Reich von Reichenstein died in 1296 and was buried in Basel Minster.
