Peter Schlesinger (born April 2, 1948 in Los Angeles ) is an American painter, sculptor and photographer. He became known in the 1960s as a model for the British artist David Hockney .

Life

Peter Schlesinger was born in Los Angeles in 1948. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley and first attended the Toluca Lake Elementary School in North Hollywood . The family lived in Encino in the late 1950s . The father, himself a hobby painter, supported the artistic talent of Peter Schlesinger and made it possible for him to take extracurricular art courses on the weekends. From 1965 on, Schlesinger studied art at the newly founded University of California in Santa Cruz before moving to the University of California in Los Angeles in 1967 . One of his teachers there was Richard Diebenkorn .

In 1966, the then 18-year-old Schlesinger met 28-year-old David Hockney, who was giving summer courses in painting at the University of Los Angeles. In the following years Schlesinger became Hockney's lover and muse . He described the relationship with Hockney as follows: "David had a big romance with California and I was an object in it." (Basically: David was in love with California and I was part of it ). Schlesinger moved to Hockney in London , where he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1968 to 1972 . He was often Hockney's model and can be seen in many of his early works, including paintings such as Peter Getting out of Nick's Pool (1966), Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972), and later in works such as Peter Schlesinger with Polaroid Camera (1977). In 1973 the partly fictional and partly documentary film A Bigger Splash was made under the direction of Jack Hazan , in which Hockney and Schlesinger portrayed themselves and gave insights into their lives.

During his ten-year stay in London, Schlesinger began to turn increasingly to photography and sculpture. He photographed numerous personalities such as Paloma Picasso , Twiggy , Amanda Lear , Andy Warhol , Robert Mapplethorpe , Christopher Isherwood , Yves Saint Laurent , Rudolf Nureyev and Manolo Blahnik . These photos were later published as a book, to which Schlesinger also contributed texts. After his return to the United States, Schlesinger settled in New York. He has lived here with his partner, photographer Eric Boman , for more than 40 years . They both live in Manhattan and Bellport on Long Island .

A significant part of Schlesinger's work is made of ceramics . These include figurative representations of people, stylized trees and other floral objects, relief-like tiles with abstract landscapes and sculptures reminiscent of ancient vases, some of which are richly ornamented. The work also includes paintings, drawings, etchings and watercolors. The motifs are partly representational, partly they show ornamental structures. The latter served the Swedish textile manufacturer Acne Studios as a template for decorative paper and clothing. Works by Peter Schlesinger have been shown in major exhibition venues, including the Hayward Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Tate Gallery in Liverpool and the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island. Schlesinger's works can be found in the collections of the Manchester Art Gallery , the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, and the Parrish Art Museum.
