Peter Sutermeister

Peter Sutermeister (born May 28, 1916 in Feuerthalen ; † January 3, 2003 in Altavilla ) was a Swiss lawyer , writer and librettist .

biography

Peter Sutermeister was born in 1916 as the second youngest child of pastor Friedrich Sutermeister (1873–1934); his hometown was Zofingen ; his siblings included Hans Martin Sutermeister and Heinrich Sutermeister . Peter sutermeister studied art history , theology and jurisprudence at the University of Bern , where he met with a thesis on the legal status of film entrepreneurs in terms of copyright protection, the film authors (published 1955) doctorate . From 1942 to 1953 he worked "as a lawyer and journalist".

Sutermeister turned early to literature and opera; He celebrated his greatest success as a librettist with the two-act opera Raskolnikoff , the text of which he wrote based on Dostoevsky ; the music came from his brother Heinrich Sutermeister ; the premiere took place in 1948 at the Royal Stockholm Opera . From 1953 to 1966 Sutermeister was Secretary General of the Swiss National Science Foundation . He was also mayor of his long-term residence Altavilla FR , where he died in 2003. In his writings, Sutermeister dealt, among other things, with the biographies of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann , with the Baroque and Lake Constance as well as with theological topics.
