The French capital has also been his adopted home since 1975, where he continuously captures the life of Parisians in pictures. In the early 1980s Turnley, like his brother before, worked as an assistant to the French photographer Robert Doisneau . Together with Adam Gopnik , Turnley published the illustrated book Parisians in 2000 . French Kiss followed in 2013 : A Love Letter to Paris.

From 1986 to 2001 Turnley was employed as a photographer for Newsweek magazine . During this time, more than 40 of his pictures were selected as cover photos for the magazine. From 2003 to 2007 he was an editor and photographer at Harper's Magazine . Among other things, he documented the fall of the Berlin Wall , the Eastern European revolutions in 1989 , the Second Gulf War , the Bosnian War , the genocide in Rwanda , the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the effects of Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti .
