John G. Morris

John Godfrey Morris (born December 7, 1916 in Chicago - † July 28, 2017 in Paris ) was an American picture editor and an important figure in the history of photojournalism . The pictures he published from the Vietnam War were of particular importance.

Career

Journalist John Godfrey Morris's life has been shaped by editing photographs for magazines and newspapers since he was a student at the University of Chicago in the 1930s . He has worked with hundreds of photographers , including the greatest names of the 20th century.

During World War II , John G. Morris worked for the weekly magazine LIFE . As photo editor for LIFE in London, he was responsible for reporting on the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944 ( D-Day ) and edited Robert Capa's historical photographs . After World War II , he held positions as picture editor for the American magazine Ladies' Home Journal , senior picture editor of Magnum Photos , deputy editor-in-chief for graphics for the Washington Post and picture editor for the New York Times .

In 1983 he moved to Paris as the European correspondent for National Geographic , where he lived, wrote, edited and campaigned for peace until his death.

His autobiography Get the Picture: a Personal History of Photojournalism was published by Random House in 1998 and reprinted in paperback by The University of Chicago Press in 2002 . It has been translated into French (Éditions de La Martinière, 1999), Japanese, Polish (Wydanie pierwsze, 2007), Italian (Contrasto Due, 2011) and Spanish (La Fabrica, 2013). Morris is also co-author of Robert Capa: D-Day , published in French and English (Point de Vues, ​​2004).
