Peter Wilhelm Heinrich Hossbach (born February 20, 1784 in Wusterhausen / Dosse (according to other information in Neustadt (Dosse) ); † April 7, 1846 in Berlin ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Hossbach, the son of a primary school teacher, studied Protestant theology in Halle (Saale) and Frankfurt (Oder) from 1803 . After various positions as private tutor, he became a preacher in Plänitz in 1810 and at the cadet house in Berlin in 1815 . Here he wrote a biography of Johann Valentin Andreaes , which was considered a standard work for a long time.

In 1821 he was appointed pastor by the Berlin magistrate at the New Church (the so-called German Cathedral ), where he worked until his death. As a supporter of Friedrich Schleiermacher , Hossbach joined the opposition to that of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. Agende, which was newly introduced and declared binding for the Protestant Church in Prussia, and in 1825 wrote a petition to the king, signed by twelve Berlin theologians, which promoted the revision of the Agende (see dispute on the agenda ). Hossbach's most important work was published in 1828, a biography of Philipp Jacob Speners compiled from the sources , for which he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1830 .

In 1830 Hossbach also became superintendent of the Friedrichswerder church district and a member of the Berlin consistory of the province of Brandenburg . In this capacity he gave, among other things, the funeral orations for Schleiermacher and Wilhelm von Humboldt . The last few years of his life were affected by serious illnesses.

Wilhelm Hossbach died in Berlin in 1846 at the age of 62. He was buried in Cemetery II of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . The pedestal grave stele made of red granite with a marble portrait medallion created by Carl Piper stands on a system surrounded by a wrought iron grille. On this is also the grave monument of his son Theodor Hossbach (1834-1894), who also became pastor of the New Church in 1881.
