Peter von Rittinger (born January 23, 1811 in Neutitschein , Moravia , † December 7, 1872 in Vienna ) was an Austrian miner and pioneer in ore processing.

Life

As the son of poor parents, he attended high school in Leipnik (Lipník nad Bečvou, Moravia) and studied philosophy and law in Olomouc , with great privation . After completing his legal studies, he chose the mining subject at the mining and forestry academy in Schemnitz (Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia). After completing his studies, he was immediately accepted into the civil service as stamp mill inspector in 1840. In this role he introduced some improvements in ore processing. In 1845 the Spitzkastens was constructed , a system for classifying fine-grained ores. The ores were carried by a stream of liquid over a series of hollow pyramid-shaped boxes, in which they are separated according to grain size. In 1849 he was appointed chief miner of the Joachimsthal district. In this year the continuous transverse cooker was also invented . The introduction of this invention into processing technology meant a great step forward, as the impact hearth made a continuous mode of operation possible. This separation process was based on the different specific weights of the ores that came together to form the sludge, the other solid substances and the water, which in Rittinger's construction moved continuously downwards in parabolic orbits over the slightly inclined hearth surface. The method used in Austria for extracting salt also goes back to Peter Rittinger, who in 1856 carried out experiments on the reproduction of the heat bound in water vapor by water power for its use to evaporate the brine and who recognized the principle of the heat pump . As a result, the heat pump was used in all Austrian salt pans for salt production .

In 1850 he was appointed to the Ministry of State Culture and Mining in Vienna as a section councilor for art construction and processing . In 1863 he received the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class associated with the hereditary knighthood. In 1864 he was given honorary citizenship by Joachimsthal (Jáchymov) . In 1868 he was finally appointed Ministerialrat in the Ministry of Finance . Most recently he was the administrative manager of the state domains and forests and the coal and steel works. He left numerous specialist publications on his special field, ore processing, in which he was considered an internationally recognized authority.

In 1936, Rittingergasse in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him. The Rittinger Institute , the Institute for Processing and Refinement, of the Montan University Leoben has also been named Peter von Rittingers for years. In 1972 the Rittinger Symposium , initiated by the Austrian Mining Association in cooperation with the Institute for Processing and Refining, took place in Leoben , in which numerous experts in the field of comminution took part. A steam locomotive procured for the Southern Railway Company in 1873 was named RITTINGER .
