The Peterskirche in Gelnhausen (also: St. Peter) is the Roman Catholic parish church in the inner city of Gelnhausen .

planning

The church was built around 1200 in Romanesque style as a parish church in direct line of sight to St. Mary's Church and was first mentioned in 1229. Originally planned was a three-aisled basilica with a cross-shaped floor plan , apses also in the side aisles and round towers on both sides of the main choir . From the existing inventory it can also be concluded that a vault was intended.

Historic entrance portal on the Obermarkt

Only parts of the lower half of the outer walls are preserved from this early period. This also includes the remarkable portals , which are strongly reminiscent of the stone carving in the Gelnhausen Palatinate . Particularly noteworthy is the Peter - tympanum over the north portal.

Construction freeze

The Langenselbold Monastery , patron saint of St. Mary's Church, stopped construction on St. Peter's Church, so that its construction had to be canceled in 1238. At this point, part of the transept , around two thirds of the nave and the south-east tower was standing .

It was not until the end of the 13th century that construction was continued and the structure was provisionally finished. The north-east tower is still being built, but the choir arch is walled up and the nave is provided with simple round pillars and a flat ceiling - regardless of the parts that have already been completed. The west window from the 15th century should have formed the conclusion of this work.

secularization

After the Reformation , the Marienkirche was completely sufficient for the relatively small Gelnhausen as a parish church. The Peterskirche was therefore given up, secularized and came into municipal possession. In the following period it partially fell into disrepair. In the 18th century it was used as a warehouse, and during wars as a military hospital . In 1830 a tobacco factory moved in . In this context, the east towers and the side apses were demolished in 1832.

Resumption of service

In 1920 the Roman Catholic community bought the building and had it rebuilt as a church from 1932–1938. In this context, emerged thesis of Karl Nothnagel about the Church. The reconstruction was carried out in a simplified form as a three-aisled basilica: to the east, a rectangular choir with two high side towers was built on a rectangular floor plan and a new crypt was built in. The upper storey is also modern. The impression of the interior is more due to the 20th century than the Romanesque. In 1982/83 the interior was redesigned, including an altar and an ambo by Hubert Elsässer . The stained glass windows date from the 1960s and were designed by Agnes Mann .

The Peterskirche is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

organ

The organ was built in 1986 by the organ builder Bernhard Schmidt (Gelnhausen). The instrument has 24 registers (slider drawers) on 2 manuals and pedal . The Spieltrakturen are mechanically, the Registertrakturen electrically.
