Parish church of St. Lorenzen in Reichenau
The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Lorenzen is 1477 meters above sea level in the municipality of Reichenau and is the highest parish church in Carinthia.
history
A predecessor of today's church was the Capella S. Marie et S. Laurentii in alpibus , consecrated on Michaelmas Day, September 29, 1216 by Bishop Heinrich II von Gurk . It was built by Truchsess Pilgrim as a private church and equipped with a new breach hatch. The Romanesque building underwent changes and additions in the Gothic and Baroque periods.
Building
The essentially Romanesque church underwent Gothic changes in the 14th century and Baroque changes in the last quarter of the 18th century . The building is clapboard. A weathercock is attached to the ridge of the nave . The retracted choir with three-eighth closure is supported by buttresses and has extensions in the north and south. The north tower with ogival sound openings is crowned by a pyramid roof. The pointed arched south portal is walled up, the pointed arched west portal with canopy is marked 1787. On the east wall of the northern extension there is a faded depiction of the crucifixion, on the southern outer wall of the nave there are remains of a St. Christopher fresco .
The nave was provided with a flat barrel vault in the last quarter of the 18th century , which is divided into five bays by means of stitch caps . From the original flat ceiling there are still painted ornamental bands in the attic. In the west of the nave there is a brick gallery with a pressed arch and cross ridges. A steeply ascending, pointed triumphal arch from the 14th century connects the nave with the single-yoke, vaulted choir. A door with a straight lintel leads from the south wall of the choir into the flat vaulted sacristy . The northern room is barrel vaulted. The eastern, ogival windows date from the 14th century, the rest from the 18th century.
Facility
On the high altar from 1708 with column architecture, sacrificial portals , blown segmented gable and side carved acanthus are the statues of Saint Lawrence and Stephen . The essay shows the teaching of Mary . The tabernacle dates from the middle of the 18th century.
The left side altar is a Marian altar, marked 1697. The altar, which is decorated with simple cartilage, consists of an aedicule over a small base and a broken segmented gable with a frame as an attachment. In the shrine there is a Queen of Mary with a crowned baby Jesus. The top picture shows the Annunciation . The altar is crowned by a Marian monogram in a halo .
The right side altar is St. Consecrated to Catherine. It has a similar structure to the Marien Altar. The central picture shows St. Catherine , the top picture shows Maria with Maphorion and child. The altar is crowned by an IHS monogram in the halo.
The rectangular, baroque pulpit with a sound cover was created in 1697 and is decorated with foliage ornamentation. The parapets of the pulpit are painted with half-figures of the evangelists . A hand holding a crucifix is attached to the upper edge of the pulpit.
A crucifixion group from the 18th century is placed above the triumphal arch . Two late Gothic wooden sculptures, the saints Laurentius and Stephanus, are placed in the choir. In the nave there are pictures of the apostles from 1796, paintings of Saints Notburga and Isidore from the 18th century, as well as a picture of the auxiliary of Mary in a carved frame from the end of the 17th century.
In the church there are four altar wing reliefs with the Annunciation, the Visitation , the birth of Christ and the death of Mary , which come from the branch church of St. Anna.
