The Roman Catholic parish church of Wernstein am Inn is located in the village of Wernstein am Inn in the municipality of Wernstein am Inn in the Schärding district in Upper Austria . The church consecrated to St. George belongs to the deanery Schärding in the diocese of Linz . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .

history

The current capital of the municipality of Wernstein am Inn was created through the union of two older villages, namely the village of St. Georgen am Inn around the parish church of St. Georg and the settlement near Wernstein Castle .

At the time of the early church organization in the Middle Ages, St. Georgen am Inn belonged to the original parish of St. Severin . In 1182, St. Severin and the "Innbruckamt" responsible for the administration of the Inn Bridge were incorporated into the St. Aegidien Hospital in the city center . Since then, the “Innbruckamt” has also administered the parishes incorporated into the hospital, which were to be assigned by the respective “Bruck pastor”. In addition to St. Severin with Schardenberg and St. Georgen am Inn , these included St. Weihflorian , Kellberg , Hauzenberg , Kopfing , Münzkirchen and Tettenweis . Soon after the incorporation of St. Severin, the seat of this parish became the hospital church St. Aegidien / St. Gilgen, where he remained until 1653.

A church building was mentioned in a document in 1284. The late Gothic church was built in the late 15th century. On the north and south sides, two barrel-vaulted reinforced concrete extensions were built according to plans by Edgar Telesko and Helmut Wertgarner in place of the older additions in 1966/1967.

architecture

The single-nave four-bay nave with a ribbed vault made of an octagonal star - similar to the Irrsdorf branch church in the state of Salzburg - is followed by a retracted two-bay choir with a ribbed vault and a five- eighth end . The buttresses are stepped. The triaxial west gallery is arched with net ribs. The half-set west tower has an onion helmet. To the north of the choir is a chapel extension with a flat hanging dome vault.

The church windows, designed by Rudolf Kolbitsch , were made in 1966/1967 in the Schlierbach Abbey glass workshop .

Furnishing

The neo-Gothic interior was built in 1892/93. In the nave is a statue of Leonhard from the second half of the 15th century, the head has been renewed. In the northern chapel there is a larger than life Gothic crucifix from the 15th century with a kneeling figure from around 1610. At the entrance to the church there are Gothic marble slabs from the 15th century.

The niche figure of St. George was made from concrete on the tower by the doctor and sculptor Alois Beham based on the model of a Gothic figure inside the church . The block altar, tabernacle and baptismal font in the chancel were created by the sculptor Karl Prantl .

On the outside of the choir head is a Roman stone from 230 AD.
