Press reviews

Tobias Kreutzer from Metal.de writes that August Burns Red take a little more distance from the unconventional interludes on Phantom Anthem and instead break the songs with pearly clear vocals. This makes the composition appear more natural and puts it in the foreground, which without exception works well on this album and comes across as varied. In his conclusion, Kreutzer writes that it is a blessing for the band to keep perfecting their own sound as long as the band can maintain the high level. Tom Krause from the German music portal Powermetal.de also rates Phantom Anthem very well, but advises the group to take a longer break after their next tour and justifies this with the fact that another album in the next two years could damage the good reputation of the band, what he makes of the lack of musical competition, among other things. Michael Seiler of Whiskey-soda.de also rates the album positively overall and sums up that although melody lines with a high recognition value can only be found in the second half of the album - he named Quake , Generations and Dangerous as musical examples - but August Burns proved himself Red with Phantom Anthem once again as the greats of their scene who have long set musical standards.

Based on four English-language reviews, Phantom Anthem received an 82 percent rating on Metacritic . Jack Rogers of British Rock Sound wrote that Phantom Anthem could cause a nasty stomach ache, but those who dare to try the album can be rewarded with lofty and incomparable ambitions. Rob Barbour of English-speaking Metal Hammer noted that August Burns Red had found a niche in the modern metalcore scene. August Burns Red, like Killswitch Engage and Atreyu , manage to stand out from the crowd of numerous metalcore bands. Natasha Van Duser from the US Alternative Press also gave the album a positive review. Chase Tremaine from the Christian music magazine Jesus Freak Hideout described Dustin Davidson's bass playing as the highlight on the album. From a Christian point of view, according to Tremaine, the album has few lyrics with a spiritual touch. Instead, the band takes up the concept of self-reflection and the feeling that everyone is "lost", which makes the album more of a Pelagian and universalist than a Christian-Orthodox perspective.
