Philip Kraft (born March 24, 1969 in Rendsburg ) is a German fragrance chemist. Since 1996 he has been employed by Givaudan , the world's largest manufacturer of fragrances and flavors , since 2001 in the role of group leader for the synthesis of new fragrances. He is also a lecturer at the University of Bern , the University of Zurich and, since the fall semester 2010/11, at the ETH Zurich .

Life

After high school and military service , where he worked in forensic chemistry and analytics , Kraft studied chemistry from 1989 to 1994 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and graduated with a diploma thesis on the subject of “Targeted Fragrance Synthesis”. From 1994 to 1996 he worked in the working group of Werner Daughtermann as a scholarship holder of the Association of the Chemical Industry on " macrocyclic fragrances through ring expansion of cycloalkanones with chiral synthetic building blocks". He received his doctorate summa cum laude in 1996 and received the faculty award of the Christian Albrechts University in 1997. Since 1996 he has been working at Givaudan's research center in Dübendorf ( Switzerland ) on the synthesis of new fragrances, with a focus on musk bodies and floral notes. In the autumn semester 2008/09 he read “Fragrance Chemistry” at the University of Bern , then at the University of Zurich and since the autumn semester 2010/11 at the ETH Zurich .

His hobby is font design . He designed some fonts for typefaces that he used for his publications. They are now on offer at URW Type Foundry and are represented in the Klingspor Museum .

Publications and patents

To date, Kraft has written 78 publications in specialist journals and is the inventor or co-inventor of currently 30 patents . Popular review articles are “Fragrance Chemistry”, “All sorts of trends: The latest developments in fragrance chemistry” and “New and unusual natural substances in fascinating floral scents” as well as the book chapter “Musks”. He was co-organizer of the Flavor & Fragrance conference series of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Society of the Chemical Industry in Manchester in 2004 and in London in 2007, which Kraft is now continuing with the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker .
