Philip of Saxony-Merseburg (born October 26, 1657 in Merseburg , † July 1, 1690 in Fleurus ) was a member of a sideline of the Albertine Wettins and Duke of Saxony-Merseburg -Lauchstädt. He was the fifth son of Duke Christian I of Saxony-Merseburg and his wife Christiana , a daughter of Duke Philip of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg .

Life

Government in Lauchstädt

In order to be able to look after his three sons who were born later, Duke Christian I assigned them their own small domains as appanages during his lifetime , which, however, remained dependent on the main Merseburg line and whose sovereign rights were severely limited. In the course of this distribution in 1684, Philipp received the Lauchstädt Office, which belonged to the Merseburg Monastery, with the town and castle of Bad Lauchstädt including the nearest accessories as his own residence, thereby establishing the Sachsen-Merseburg-Lauchstädt line. Philipp had the castle expanded for himself and his family and the parish church , which was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War and later demolished, was rebuilt. In November 1685 the first baptism could take place in the new church in the half-finished nave .

Philipp devoted himself entirely to his military career. As a colonel in the service of the Duke of Brunswick and an officer in the Imperial Army against Louis XIV , he fell in the Palatinate War of Succession in the Battle of Fleurus .

Death and burial

Duke Philip died on July 1, 1690 at the age of 32 in the Battle of Fleurus . He was transferred to Merseburg and buried in a pewter coffin in the princely crypt of Merseburg Cathedral . Since he left no surviving male descendants, his apanage fell back to his father, who, however, left it to Philip's widow as a widow's residence. However, in 1704 this withdrew to the castle in Forst , which also belongs to Sachsen-Merseburg .

Marriages and offspring

His first marriage was on July 9, 1684 in Weimar with Eleonore Sophie von Sachsen-Weimar , the daughter of Johann Ernst II, Duke of Sachsen-Weimar from his marriage to Christina Elisabeth of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Franzhagen .

He had the following children with his first wife:

  • Christiana Ernestina (born September 16, 1685 in Merseburg; † June 20, 1689 ibid), Princess of Saxony-Merseburg-Lauchstädt
  • Johann Wilhelm (born January 27, 1687 in Bad Lauchstädt; † June 21, 1687 in Merseburg), Hereditary Prince of Saxony-Merseburg-Lauchstädt

18 months after the death of his first wife, he married Luise Elisabeth von Württemberg-Oels , the daughter of Christian Ulrich I, Duke of Württemberg-Oels from his first marriage to Anna Elisabeth von Anhalt-Bernburg, in Bernstadt on August 17, 1688 .

With her he had a son:

  • Christian Ludwig (born July 21, 1689 in Merseburg; † June 6, 1690 ibid), Hereditary Prince of Saxony-Merseburg-Lauchstädt
