Philipp Helm OCist (born June 21, 1971 in Graz ) is the 58th abbot of Rein Abbey .

Life

Philipp Helm was born on June 21, 1971 as Hagen Helm in Graz. He grew up with his brother in Peggau and attended the local elementary school. During his school days at the Bundesgymnasium Rein , he began to be interested in the faith and in monastery life. He was involved in Catholic youth work and spent several stays at Rein Abbey . After graduating from high school in 1989, Helm decided to join the Cistercian monastery in Rein.

After the novitiate he began to study specialist theology and independent religious education in Graz and Innsbruck . He completed his graduation with a thesis on canon law . Helm then did a pastoral internship in the parish of Gratwein and was ordained a priest in 1996 by Bishop Johann Weber . After the death of Abbot Robert Beigl in 1996, Helm became provisional parish for the parishes of Gratwein and Stübing . He was also active as a delegate and delegate to the congregational chapter in various committees of the Rein monastery and as a teacher at the Rein Federal High School and later also at the elementary schools of his parishes.

In the course of some personnel changes under Abbot Petrus Steigenberger in 2004, Helm was also appointed chaplain to Maria Straßengel . In 2006 he was appointed parish moderator of the parish association of Gratwein and Maria-Straßengel. On January 9, 2009, Helm was elected administrator for a year and a half by the Rein monastery chapter.

On September 24, 2018, Philipp Helm was elected 58th abbot by the Rein Abbey chapter.

On Sunday, November 4, 2018, Abbot President Maximilian Heim and the Papal Nuncio Archbishop Peter Zurbriggen were present, the Abbot's benediction by the Graz diocesan Bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl . The festive sermon was given by Bishop emeritus Egon Kapellari . Numerous prominent guests, such as u. a. the Styrian governor, honored the new abbot.
