Life

Meyer was born in a Protestant parsonage and attended the later Schiller-Gymnasium Hameln and the Ernestinum Celle from 1867–1873 . He then studied Protestant theology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen and the University of Leipzig . There he joined the Corps Teutonia Göttingen (1873) and the Corps Guestphalia Leipzig (1875). He passed the first theological exam in 1877, the second in 1880. After this graduation, he became inspector of the Göttingen Theological Monastery . After his ordination on December 4, 1881, he was pastor of the evangelical community in Smyrna from 1881 to 1888, and from 1888 to 1891 in Binnen , Nienburg / Weser district . In 1891 he became director of studies at the Erichsburg seminary in Einbeck, but in 1895 he moved to the regional consistory of the Hanover provincial church in Hanover . In 1902 he was appointed to the Hanover State Consistory. In 1901/02 he also officiated as general superintendent for the general diocese of Osnabrück-Hoya-Diepholz, which was in the process of being dissolved . On August 1, 1924, he retired as senior consistorial advisor.

A focus of his professional activity was his commitment to youth care, in particular the training and further education of clergy and teachers. For this purpose, he wrote several study and examination regulations for students of Protestant theology and vicars. Furthermore, Meyer earned himself through research on the recent Greek Orthodox church history, but also published studies on the regional church history. From 1910 until his death he was chairman of the Society for Church History in Lower Saxony . His son Philipp Meyer was also a Lutheran theologian and church historian.
