Philipp Moritz of Bavaria
Philipp Moritz Maria Dominik Joseph von Bayern , also Philipp Moritz Maria Dominikus Joseph von Bayern (born August 5, 1698 in Brussels , † March 12, 1719 in Rome ) was a Bavarian prince and posthumously elected prince-bishop of Paderborn and Münster .
Life
Philipp Moritz was a son of Elector Maximilian II. Emanuel of Bavaria (1662–1726) from his marriage to Therese Kunigunde (1676–1730), daughter of the Polish King Johann III. Sobieski .
In 1717 Philipp Moritz went to Rome for theological training with his younger brother Clemens August . Here Philipp Moritz died of measles at the age of 20 . Unaware of the prince's death, the Paderborn Cathedral Chapter elected him Bishop of Paderborn on March 14, 1719 and the Chapter in Münster on March 21, both times unanimously, as Bishop of Münster . The news of his death finally reached Paderborn on March 22nd. After a brief vacancy, the chapters decided in favor of Philipp Moritz's brother Clemens August.
The congratulatory address of the Jesuits shows on the copper engraving on the title page the city under a starry sky with the zodiac sign Gemini, which is supposed to symbolize the brothers. While Clemens August appears in shine, Philipp Moritz sinks into darkness in this depiction. Philipp Moritz was buried in the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome.
