Philipp Schoch (born October 12, 1979 in Winterthur ) is a former Swiss snowboarder . He spent his youth together with his brother Simon Schoch in the Tössbergland in the Zurich Oberland . His father ran a ski lift there. His current place of residence is Steg im Fischenthal .
He won the gold medal in the parallel giant slalom at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , ahead of the Swede Richard Rikardsson . Four years later, at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he was able to defend his gold medal and won just ahead of his brother Simon Schoch . At the 2007 World Cup in Arosa , he won the silver medal in the same discipline and in the parallel slalom; these successes came as a surprise due to his severe back pain.
After winning the Olympic gold medal in the parallel giant slalom twice, he missed qualifying for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . Because of back problems, he was only able to start the season late. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he started the parallel slalom with pain and retired after a fall. With that Schoch ended his active sports career.
