Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle

Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle (* 1957 in Munich ) is a German conductor and composer .

Life

The son of the opera director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and the actress and director Margit Saad studied composition with Rochus Gebhardt, conducting with Richard Böck and Peter Falk , and later with Otmar Suitner in Weimar and Herbert von Karajan in Berlin and Salzburg at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich .

Ponnelle conducted a. a. at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, at opera houses in Kassel, Innsbruck, Marseille, Nice, Zurich, Košice, Bratislava, Dushanbe, Bishkek, Tashkent, Almaty, Baku, Timișoara, Lemberg and Odessa. In addition, he conducted at the Festival of Two Worlds in Charleston and Spoleto, at the International Music Festival in Bratislava, in classical programs on ZDF and at the Mozart Festival in Würzburg. A special project on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Slovenian independence was the world premiere of the opera “Brata” (Brothers) by Alojz Ajdič in 2005 at the Ljubljana State Opera, which Ponnelle directed at the composer's request.

From 1992 to 1996 he worked with the State Orchestra of Belarus in Minsk , first as principal guest conductor , then as chief conductor. This collaboration resulted in CD recordings that were released by Musicaphon and BMG . The Bayerische Rundfunk produced the 90-minute documentary "birdsong" in which his work in the Philharmonic plays a central role.

Ponnelle led a. a. the radio symphony orchestras in Baden-Baden, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Bucharest and Luxembourg, the symphonic orchestras in Essen, Wuppertal, Berlin, São Paulo, Vladivostok, Genoa and Valencia, the Philharmonia Hungarica , the George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest , the Orchester National de Lyon, the state orchestras of Greece, Slovenia, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Lithuania, Slovakia and the Ukraine, as well as the philharmonic orchestras of Strasbourg, Monte-Carlo, St. Gallen , Basel, Dresden , Munich, Zagreb, Ostrava, Brno, Wrocław, Krakow, Oradea, Cluj, Donetsk, Yalta, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Rostov-on-Don, Yaroslavl, Kazan, Volgograd, Voronezh, Nizhny-Novgorod, Saratov, Novosibirsk and St. Petersburg.

As a freelance conductor, he has made guest appearances from the Ukraine via the Caucasus, the Volga region, Saint Petersburg, Central Asia and Siberia to the Pacific. In the west he conducted a. a. the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Orchester Philharmonique de Lyon, the Munich Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony, at the Zurich Opera House and at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.

Ponnelle composed the music for seven documentaries, "Italy - Land of Promise" (director: Christian Rischert), which were produced by Bavarian television. In 2010 the Leipzig label GENUIN released a CD with some of his chamber music works. His music was u. a. performed at the international festival for contemporary music in Odessa (Ukraine) and Rostov-on-Don (Russia), in Tashkent by the ensemble for modern music "Omnibus", in Munich a. a. in the Herkulessaal in the concert series by Georg Hörtnagel, by musicians of the Bavarian State Orchestra in the Künstlerhaus, by members of the Munich Chamber Orchestra as part of a portrait concert in the Orff-Zentrum-Munich, as well as in the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
