Pierre [ pɪər ] is the capital of the US state South Dakota and is located on the Missouri River , near Lake Oahe in the center of the state. With around 14,000 inhabitants ( as of July 1, 2017, US Census Bureau ), it is the seventh largest in this state. The city is also the administrative seat of Hughes County .
geography
Pierre is on US Highways 14 and 83 . There is a regional airport to the east of the city. Pierre is one of only four capital cities that are not on an interstate highway .
history
Pierre was founded in 1880 on the Missouri River across from Fort Pierre . In 1889, Pierre became the capital of South Dakota, previously there were Yankton (1861-1883) and Bismarck (1883-1889).
37 buildings and sites in the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of November 12, 2018).
Demographics
In 2010, Pierre lived 13,646 people, of whom 84.3% were white, 0.5% African American, 10.9% Indian, 0.6% Asian, 1.9% Latino and 1.8% other ethnic groups.

- The feature film Dances with Wolves was shot not far from Pierre.
