Pierre Vernier , actually Pierre Rayer , (born May 25, 1931 in Saint-Jean-d'Angély in the Charente-Maritime department ) is a French actor .

life and work

He became internationally known in film in supporting roles under the director Claude Chabrol and alongside the actor Jean-Paul Belmondo . Most recently, Vernier worked for Chabrol in the film Secret State Affairs with a. a. Isabelle Huppert . He was often used as a type actor , especially in the 1960s and 1970s . a. several times in crime films alongside Jean Gabin . Mostly he played policemen and politicians , officers , nobles , doctors and other people of respect. His best-known films with Belmondo in the 1980s included The Puppeteer and The Professional , directed by Georges Lautner . Belmondo and Vernier are also private friends and appear together on television shows .

Vernier gained fame as a performer of high profile characters on television , where he also participated in British and German productions. He became a star as the hero of the series Rocambole (1964-1965) and as Richelieu (1977). He occasionally took on major TV supporting roles and developed into a character actor since the late 1980s . He played in television films and multi-part series as well as a series actor and guest actor in television series . Vernier shone in strong supporting roles such as legacy sneak and banker des Grassins in Eugénie Grandet (1994). In 2008, at the age of 77, Vernier played a leading role again: In the French television play Adieu De Gaulle, adieu (director: Laurent Herbiet), he played the former French President Charles de Gaulle in the last years of his life. For his performance, he was awarded the prize for best actor at the international Festival du film de télévision de Luchon in Luchon .

The trained theater actor has been regularly seen on stage in France since the 1950s. a. in pieces by Albert Camus , Jean-Paul Sartre , Peter Weiss and Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt .
