Pieter Cornet

Pieter Cornet (* around 1575 in Brussels ; † March 27, 1633 ibid) was a Franco-Flemish composer and organist of the Renaissance .

Live and act

No information has been passed on about the origins and years of training of Pieter Cornet. The first documented news about his work is his employment as organist at the Saint-Nicolas church in Brussels from 1603 to 1606. He then took over the position of court organist in the same city for Archduke Albrecht and his wife Isabella . His colleagues in the same position were Peter Philips , John Bull , Juan Zacarias and Vicenzio Gumai. Tradition shows that Peter Philips was mainly assigned to the Archduke and Pieter Cornet more to Duchess Isabella. Cornet took over the office of canon in the town of Zinnik ( Soignies ) in 1611 , but gave up this position after just one month because he had decided to marry in the same year. The birth of seven children is documented for the years 1612 to 1623. In the account books of the Brussels court orchestra, Pieter Cornet is listed as a musician for the years 1612 to 1618; However, it is very likely that he remained connected to this institution in the following years until the end of his life, while simultaneously working with John Bull and Peter Philips. The people in charge of the Saint Rombouts Cathedral in Mechelen had already taken Cornet's advice in 1615 about their organ; In 1624 he contracted to supervise the construction of part of this organ.

meaning

Even if only a few works by Pieter Cornet have survived, these testify to a great versatility and to the familiarity with organ music from Germany, England, Spain and Italy gained at the international court in Brussels. A toccata with fantasia is clearly reminiscent of the works of Girolamo Frescobaldi , Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli , Girolamo Diruta or Claudio Merulo . The style of Spanish organ pieces with their characteristic features of a " Tiento de medio registro de baxon" is shown in another Fantasia by Cornet. The figuration and ornamentation of some works show English influence, possibly mediated by John Bull and Peter Philips. In contrast to his famous contemporary Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck , his great fantasies are multi-themed; they are characterized by lively invention and rich structure.
