Peter Candid (* around 1548 in Bruges , † 1628 in Munich ; also Pietro Candid ; actually Pieter de Witte , Latin Petrus Canisius ) was a Flemish painter and graphic artist .

From 1568 he lived with his father, the bronze caster Elias de Witte in Florence . He was a student of Giorgio Vasari and worked from 1575 for the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando I de 'Medici . The connection to Vasari gave him the opportunity to work on the execution of the Sala Regia in the Vatican and also on the dome of the Florence Cathedral . In 1586 he accepted Duke Wilhelm V's call to the Munich court and from then on lived with interruptions until the end of his life in Bavaria , where he also created works for churches in other Bavarian cities. For Wilhelm's successor Maximilian I, he painted several halls in the Munich residence between 1611 and 1619 . The Munich period also included designs for tapestries for the carpet manufacturer founded in Munich in 1604 . These drawings were engraved in copper by G. Amling and JA Zimmermann . The University Library of Salzburg has signed sheets ( P. Cand. Pinxit ).

Candid also designed two portals and a Madonna at the front of the Munich Residence, the fountain with the statue of Otto von Wittelsbach in the front courtyard of the Residence, the grave monument of Emperor Ludwig in the Frauenkirche and the Madonna on the Marian column in Munich.

Peter Candid has also painted numerous wall and ceiling paintings in the Old Schleissheim Palace as well as a number of altarpieces for churches in Munich, Freising , Augsburg and other places, among which the Assumption of Mary in the Frauenkirche in Munich is considered the most important.

In Munich- Giesing , a section of the Middle Ring with Candidstrasse , Candidbrücke and Candidtunnel is named after him. This also applies to Candidplatz with the subway station of the same name .

His bust was displayed in the Hall of Fame in Munich.
