geography
Piqua is located on the Great Miami River in western Ohio. The Interstate 75 connects the city with Dayton in the south and Toledo in the north.
history
In prehistoric times, members of the Adena and Hopewell cultures settled in the area on the upper Great Miami River . In the middle of the 18th century there was a Miami Indian settlement near the present city and from 1749 to 1752 a trading post called Pickawillany . A second phase of settlement began in 1780 when a group of Shawnees had to give up their villages on the Mad River . They brought the old place names with them to their new homes in the Miami Valley and called their settlements Upper Piqua (Bi-co-we-that) and Lower Piqua (Chillicothe).
Instead of the village of Upper Piqua, General Anthony Wayne built a fort in 1793, and Joe Gard, the first white settler, settled in 1796. 1807, the resort has received under the name Washington the status of Village , but the name was not well received, and in 1816 the original Shawnee Name Piqua was reintroduced. In 1823 there were around 350 people living here. From 1837 Piqua became a traffic and trade center due to its location on the Miami-Erie Canal , from 1858 the place was also connected to the railroad.
At Piqua there is a nuclear power plant that produced electricity from 1963 to 1965 before it was shut down due to cooling problems. It was the first municipal nuclear power plant in the USA.
Economy and Infrastructure
Piqua is known for the manufacture of underwear and has 16 factories that produce these textiles. The place has also been called the underwear capital of the world, which is still celebrated with a Great Outdoor Underwear Day. North of town is the smaller airfield Piqua Airport (Hartzell Field), the closest major airport is the Dayton International Airport in Dayton .
