Pirri , real name José Martínez Sánchez (born March 11, 1945 in Ceuta ), is a former Spanish football player . He spent most of his career at Real Madrid .

career

Pirri began his footballing career in his hometown with the clubs Imperio de Riffien , Sociedad Deportiva Ceuta and Atlético de Ceuta , before moving to the Segunda División for Granada CF in 1963 . His successes there and being called up to the amateur national team drew Real Madrid's attention to the then 19-year-old player, and so he moved to the capital in 1964. The club was in the process of restructuring at the time. Stars like Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás were getting on in years and were gradually being replaced by young Spaniards like Amancio , Grosso , Zoco , Sanchis sen. or Pirri himself replaced. This newly formed team finally won the European Cup for the sixth time under the nickname "el Madrid yé-yé" after a five-year lean period in 1966 . After numerous successes with the Madrilenians, Pirri finally moved to Mexico for Puebla FC in 1980, as a 35-year-old . There he also finished his medical studies and returned to Real Madrid as a team doctor . Between 1996 and 2000 he worked as the club's sports director.

National team

Pirri played 41 times for the Spanish national team and took part with her in the 1966 and 1978 World Cups.

Anecdotes

Pirri made a name for himself especially through his fighting spirit and will to win. For example, he played the final of the 1970/71 European Cup Winners' Cup with a bandaged arm due to a broken collarbone, and the 1975 Copa del Rey final with a broken jaw.

For this reason the club awarded him the Laureada (in German laurel wreath ), an award with which Real Madrid rewards special sacrifice. Except for Pirri, she is only wearing Gregorio Benito .
