The Planet is a defense research ship of the German Navy . The ship is a seaworthy twin - hull ship in SWATH design.
Construction and task
For German research vessels, it is common to pass on traditional names, especially those from astronomy, to the successor models. The Planet is the third ship in such a series.
The Planet was built under construction number 537 by Thyssen Nordseewerke in Emden . The keel of the ship was laid in April 2002, the launch on August 12, 2003. The ship was put into service on May 31, 2005 in Eckernförde . The construction costs amounted to 90 million euros.
Due to the construction, the buoyancy is mainly generated by the floating bodies, which are completely submerged. The thin struts that connect both floats to the hull hardly contribute to buoyancy. Even in bad weather and rough seas, this enables the ship to remain in a very quiet position. It offers ideal conditions for hydrographic research on the high seas.
One half of the fuselage is intended for testing sonar devices and acoustic sensors , the other half for testing torpedoes and anti-torpedo weapons . For this purpose, the ship is equipped with a torpedo launch facility, which is located in the starboard float. Another important task of the ship is the determination of salinity , density , currents and other hydrographic parameters. The thermocline that depends on it determines the locatability of submarines .
In addition to the NATO research ship Alliance , the Planet is one of the quietest motor-driven surface ships in the world. The ship can stay at sea for up to 30 days, covering up to 5,000 nautical miles before having to enter a port.
The Planet is the Bundeswehr Technical Center for Ships and Naval Weapons Bundeswehr, Maritime Technology and Research (WTD 71) in Eckernförde for marine-oriented technology and research activities of the Bundeswehr available.
Technical specifications
The draft of the ship is 6.8 meters. It can be extended to 8.8 meters. The hull of the ship has ice class E.
The electricity on board is generated by a total of four generators . Two of the generators each have an output of 1,250 kilowatts and 1,700 kilowatts.
Others
The ship was named "Ship of the Year 2004" by Hansa - International Maritime Journal .
