Plastic Beach is the third studio album by the band Gorillaz . It was released in March 2010.

background

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett started a Gorillaz project called Carousel in November 2007 , which initially wasn't supposed to be a new album and which consisted of just concepts for a while. In 2008, the two decided to record a new album, but the Gorillaz characters should be presented under new aspects because Hewlett was tired of drawing the characters. The recordings then began in June 2008, u. a. collaborated with the National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music in Beirut . In addition, there were a number of top-class guest singers who gave the songs additional voices. a. Bobby Womack , Kano , Mos Def , Gruff Rhys , Snoop Dogg , Lou Reed and Mark E. Smith , and ex- The-Clash members Mick Jones and Paul Simonon played the title song Plastic Beach . One song with The Horrors didn't even make it onto the album in the end. Recorded in Derby and Devon (England) and Damascus (Syria).

The idea behind the album was to combine pop with a statement and thus give it more depth. The album name refers to the way our society and nature deal with the huge amounts of plastic waste produced, based on impressions that Albarn collected in Mali and London.

The pop approach was confirmed by many critics, but largely received positively. Andreas Borcholte wrote on Spiegel.de :

Versatile, imaginative, cosmopolitan and original, that is to say more courageous, modern music did not sound for a long time. Pop mixes with hip-hop and dub, oriental and Asian influences add to western songwriting tradition, electronica meets traditional soul.

Pitchfork named it Best New Music , and it was album of the month at Musikexpress . It reached number 2 on the charts in England and the USA and number 3 in Germany.

The first video for the single Stylo , which was released on January 26, 2010, was noticeable for two things: on the one hand Bruce Willis played along, on the other hand it showed the characters for the first time as 3D models in contrast to the earlier 2D animations .
