The eponymous Platte River flows through the town and flows around 20 km southwest into the Mississippi , which forms the border with Iowa . The Illinois border is around 25 km south.

The US Highway 151 runs in northeast-southwest direction by the Town of Platteville and serves as a southern bypass of the city of Platteville. In addition, Wisconsin State Highways 80 and 81 and County Highways B and D meet in the city of Platteville. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
