Plohn was first mentioned in 1140 as Plona . In 1279 Plohn Castle was mentioned as the manor of the brothers Heinrich and Otto von Plohn. It was destroyed in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War by the troops of General Heinrich von Holk and then rebuilt. From 1534 to the 19th century, the manorial rule over the place lay partly with the upper and lower manor Plohn .

Until 1856 Plohn belonged to the Electoral Saxon and later royal Saxon office of Plauen . In 1856 Plohn was affiliated with the Lengenfeld court office and in 1875 with the Auerbach administration . Between 1858 and 1921 the Plohner beer brewery was in operation with 32 cellars on 2 floors. The restaurant "Zur Alten Brauerei" is now located in a section of the building that has been preserved. In 1861, today's church with a late Gothic winged altar was built on the foundations of the previous building.

As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Plohn, like its neighboring village Abhorn, came to the Auerbach district in the Chemnitz district in 1952 (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon district of Auerbach from 1990 onwards . On January 1, 1979 Abhorn was incorporated into Plohn. As a result of the incorporation of the municipality of Plohn with its district Abhorn into the city of Lengenfeld, both places changed on July 1, 1993 to the district of Reichenbach in Vogtland , which was added to the Vogtlandkreis in 1996. In 1996, the Plohn amusement park was opened south of the town.
