Plymouth is a city in the US state of Massachusetts .

history

Plymouth was founded by the Pilgrim Fathers who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620 (see Mayflower Treaty ). They named the community after its place of origin Plymouth on the Devonshire coast in England . Plymouth was recognized as the seat of the Plymouth Colony in 1633 and part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691 .

Today's economic importance lies next to metal and fish processing in the textile industry and in shipbuilding. Plymouth has about 57,000 residents. Sights include a replica of the Mayflower and Plymouth Rock , the rock where legend has it that the Pilgrim Fathers first landed. Both “contemporary witnesses” of the colonization can be seen in the city's harbor. There is also a living open-air museum south of the center, the Plimoth Plantation .

According to tradition, William Bradford landed the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock . The associated establishment of the colony of Plymouth, along with the establishment of Virginia, is considered the origin of the United States . Plymouth is home to the National Monument to the Forefathers (formerly known as the Pilgrim Monument ), which was built between 1907 and 1910. It is the third tallest statue in the United States

The Pilgrim nuclear power plant is located on site .
